The Opportunity
The Lead Medical Coordinator oversees all health services for children in care — ensuring timely, appropriate medical, dental, mental health, and public health support from intake through post-release. This is an ORR key personnel position requiring prior credential approval. Working within their professional licensure and scope of practice, the Lead Medical Coordinator reviews children’s health records and coordinates and initiates referrals and service orders across departments in collaboration with clinical and case management staff.
Please note: This is a grant-funded, term-limited position for up to three years, aligned to the ORR grant cycle. Continuation is contingent on grant funding.
What You Will Own
Oversee and coordinate urgent, emergent, and preventative health services, including scheduling appointments and coordinating transportation.
Review children’s health records and, consistent with licensure and scope of practice, coordinate and initiate referrals and service orders across departments.
Supervise, train, and mentor Medical Coordinator(s); provide guidance on pediatric, adolescent, and migrant health; complete evaluations and payroll approvals.
Develop and maintain policies for confidential health records, triage, medical emergency response, environmental health and safety, and post-release care coordination.
Ensure compliance with ORR requirements, 45 CFR Part 410, HIPAA, CARF standards, and NC DHHS licensing; provide ongoing quality assurance.
Maintain complete, confidential medical records; monitor UC Portal entries and the program EHR.
Serve as primary liaison with providers, insurers, and facilities; monitor Point Comfort Underwriters (PCU) coverage; ensure interpretation/translation services; serve as medical chaperone as needed.
Required Qualifications
Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) licensed in North Carolina (higher health-related qualification under the ORR standard).
Minimum one (1) year in public health or a health care setting, with care coordination, health administration, or direct clinical care experience.
Demonstrated supervisory experience.
Bilingual English/Spanish required.
Knowledge of medical terminology, health care regulations, and HIPAA; proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn the UC Portal and EHR.
Must be at least 21 years of age; must pass all ORR-required background investigations and show proof of immunity to vaccine-preventable respiratory diseases.
ORR prior credential approval required before assuming the position.
Preferred Qualifications
ORR-funded LTFC or unaccompanied children’s program experience, including UC Portal and PCU coordination (strongly preferred).
Pediatric, adolescent, and migrant/refugee health and post-release coordination experience.
CARF accreditation and NC DHHS licensing familiarity.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary: $104,000 – $110,000 annually. Benefits include group health, dental, and vision insurance; employer-paid basic life insurance (coverage begins after the eligibility period); paid time off and paid federal holidays; professional development; GSA-rate mileage reimbursement; and workers’ compensation.
