Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to support the Occupational Health and Safety Bureau's mission of protecting the health and safety of New Mexico workers. This position promotes safe and healthful workplace environments through regulatory compliance efforts, hazard prevention, and stakeholder engagement. By supporting workplace safety initiatives and ensuring adherence to occupational health and safety requirements, this position contributes to reducing workplace injuries and illnesses while enhancing the quality of life and economic well-being of New Mexico's workforce.
How does it get done?
- Perform on-site inspections and investigations
- Communicate appropriate abatement periods to employers and verify abatement of violations
- Complete inspection reports and case files for each inspection and investigation
- Communicate status of open inspection reports to Compliance Supervisor
- Receive and enter allegations of hazards through complaints, referrals, and reports of accidents
- Maintain assigned equipment according to manufacturer recommendations and Bureau guidelines
- Attend and complete formal training as scheduled, in accordance with Bureau training directive

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, engineering, physical science, natural science, environmental science, social science, criminology, or closely related field and five (5) years of related work experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a field and office setting. Exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, lifting and reaching may be required. Ability to complete assignments with a high level of accuracy within strict time constraints, must be able to lift 25-30 lbs. Extensive driving, including overnight travel is required of this position. Interacting with the general public and making recommendations on safety related issues to businesses in the region. Ability to read, write and speak in Spanish is preferred. Required to drive a State Vehicle in course of job duties. Successful completion of the OSHA 510 or OSHA 511 course is required.
