The City of South Lake Tahoe has an opening for a journey-level Streets Maintenance Technician (4 - 6 years experience) to join its Public Works team and perform a wide variety of tasks maintaining and repairing the streets and public areas of the City. This position works alone or in teams of 2 - 4 technicians based on the needs of the task. The role works a 7 am - 3 pm shift, Monday - Friday and may have on-call responsibilities for weekend and holiday needs. The position reports to the Maintenance Manager.
Identifying characteristics
The Maintenance Technician III/IV series is an advanced journey level maintenance series. Positions at this level are distinguished from Maintenance Technician I/II by the level of responsibility assumed and complexity of duties assigned. Employees perform more difficult and responsible types of technical duties, including performing technically complex maintenance duties related to area of assignment. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility, sharing their expertise with other staff and assuming responsibility for broadening their skill base by assuming responsibility for a broader cross section of assignments.
Maintenance Technician III/IV requires significant maintenance and operations skillsets. The role performs complex maintenance and operations tasks requiring specific knowledge, training, and/or certifications. Incumbents work with a high level of independence to perform assigned maintenance and construction work. Specific duties may vary depending upon the functional section to which work is assigned. The Ideal Candidate will possess:-
4 - 6 or more years of experience in progressively more responsible maintenance and reliability projects.

A desire to serve as a mentor to less experienced staff and take ownership of the success of the team

A Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement and a clean DMV record

A willingness to learn and develop new skills and pursue certifications beneficial to the City

A customer service mindset and the ability to interact positively with the public

An emphasis on safety with the ability to think through processes to recognize possible consequences and avoid risk

Attention to detail when reading drawings, instructions, codes and safety notices
Placement in Maintenance Technician III or Maintenance Technician IV is at the discretion of the hiring manager provided the following criteria are met: (1) the minimum qualifications and the time-in-grade requirements are met; and (2) demonstration of the ability to independently perform the full scope of the assigned duties via completion of department training plan & testing. The selected candidate may be offered either the Maintenance Technician III or Maintenance Technician IV position based on demonstrated skill strength and experience.
To be hired as a
Maintenance Technician III a candidate must have a
2 years of experience in a Maintenance Technician II role or similar or 4 years of experience in general maintenance and construction in one or more of the following functional areas: parks, streets/storm drainage, facilities, snow removal.
To be hired as a
Maintenance Technician IV a candidate must have a
2 years of experience in a Maintenance Technician III role or similar or 6 years of experience in general maintenance and construction in one or more of the following functional areas: parks, streets/storm drainage, facilities, snow removal.
Maintenance Technician III: $4,737 - $5,738 per month
Maintenance Technician IV: $5,213 - $6,335 per month

Knowledge of:

Intermediate and complex building trades such as Carpentry, Roofing, Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical, Accessibility, Title 24 Energy etc.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience Guidelines: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education and/or Experience:
- Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
- Two years full-time experience as a Maintenance Technician III or six years of general maintenance and construction in one or more of the following
functional areas: parks, streets/storm drainage, facilities, snow removal.
Certificates/License Requirements: -
Possession of a valid Class B California or Nevada driver's license (Commercial Driver's License subject to Department of Transportation drug testing requirements and DMV pull notice program).
(If appointed from an internal position, must possess Class B prior to appointment. If hired from outside of City employment, must obtain
within 6 months of hire.)
Depending on assignment and operational needs: some positions may require one or more of the following certificates:

IMSA Traffic Safety Specialist and Traffic Safety Through Work Zones Certificate
Incumbents must be willing to work mandatory overtime when required; may be required to work nights, weekends and holidays as required in emergency situations.
Special Requirements - Safety regulations prohibit incumbents from wearing contact lenses when working with certain chemicals. Incumbents in positions requiring use of a respirator are prohibited from wearing beards or other facial hair which prevents a proper respirator fit.
