Location & Shift Details
SCI Somerset (1600 Walters Mill Rd, Somerset, PA 15510):
- Shift Hours: 2nd Shift, 2:00 PM to 10:30 PM
Compensation
W-2 Employee with Benefits — $55.00/hour

W-2 Employee (No Benefits) — $60.00/hour
1099 Independent Contractor — $70.00/hour
Please Note: 1099 Independent Contractors are not eligible for Workers' Compensation, Employee Benefits, Unemployment Benefits, or Employer Tax Withholding. Independent Contractors are responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and business expenses.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current, unrestricted RN license (Pennsylvania or Compact State) with no disciplinary actions
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program
- Minimum 2 years of recent RN experience (preferably in correctional, acute care, or emergency settings)
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Fluency in English (spoken and written)
- Ability to provide verifiable education, training, and employment history
- Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office products
- Ability to work in a secure, correctional environment and interact professionally with inmate/detainee populations
- Additional training specific to correctional nursing may be required.
Position Summary
As a Correctional Registered Nurse, you will serve as a charge nurse, staff nurse, or assessment coordinator, delivering comprehensive nursing care and treatment to inmates and detainees at Pennsylvania state correctional institutions. Responsibilities include:
- Providing direct nursing care for inmates/detainees, including assessment, triage, and ongoing monitoring
- Supervising paraprofessional and non-professional staff within the facility
- Developing, implementing, and evaluating individualized care plans in accordance with correctional health standards
- Administering medications, IV therapy, wound care, and performing clinical procedures as required
- Maintaining accurate documentation, adhering to facility protocols and state regulations
- Participating in emergency response, infection control, and quality improvement activities
- Ensuring safety and security in all interactions with inmate/detainee populations
Correctional RNs must demonstrate competency in a wide range of clinical skills, including but not limited to: airway management, IV therapy, medication administration, wound care, vital signs, emergency response, infection control, chronic disease management, mental health assessment, and use of electronic medical records. Regular assessments and adherence to best nursing practices in a correctional setting are required.
