Job Summary:
The Landscape Laborer is responsible for performing a variety of tasks to assist with the installation, maintenance, and renovation of landscapes and outdoor areas. This role involves physical labor, working outdoors in various weather conditions, and operating a variety of tools and equipment to achieve desired landscaping outcomes.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Safely operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment such as saws, drills, and hammers.
- Dig trenches and planting pits to specified depths and dimensions to accommodate various landscape features, such as irrigation systems, drainage systems, and plantings.
- Install irrigation systems, including emitters, tubing, lateral lines, main central lines, valves, valve boxes, risers, heads, backflow preventives, and associated components.
- Install shrubs and trees according to design specifications.
- Install landscape fabric to control weed growth and improve soil conditions.
- Install aggregates such as gravel, mulch, and decorative stones to enhance landscape aesthetics and functionality.
- Safely install boulders and other large landscape features, ensuring proper placement and stability.
- Install various types of edging to define garden beds, walkways, and other landscape elements.
- Maintain shrubs, trees, and aggregate areas to ensure a healthy and attractive landscape.
- Build and break down walkways and handrails.
- Remove trees and debris, end pumps, compressors, and generators.
- Installation and maintenance of traffic control devices and patterns, including traffic barricades, cones, and markers.
- Control of traffic near, in, and around work zones.
- Load and unload equipment and materials from trucks and vehicles.
- Follow instructions and comprehend construction needs.
- Regular attendance is required according to company policy to ensure the crew can operate at the normal efficiency level.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Previous experience in landscaping or grounds maintenance is preferred but not required.
- Basic use and knowledge of standard hand tools and equipment.
- Strong knowledge of safety protocols and procedures in a construction setting.
- Proficiency in operating construction tools, equipment, and machinery.
- Excellent cutting, drilling, and assembling of structures.
- Able to read, interpret, and understand drawings, instructions, and blueprints.
- Able to use various hand tools (pickaxes, trench shovels, sledgehammers, concrete saws, etc.).
- Working knowledge of general hand tools, power tools, and compaction equipment.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Able to work overtime and weekends as needed.
- Relevant certifications or licenses may be required depending on local regulations.
Education and Experience:
- High School or equivalent (preferred).
- Minimum two (2) years’ field experience in the construction industry.
- Previous experience or the completion of a relevant apprenticeship is preferred
- Valid Driver’s License with clear MVR (preferred).
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent walking on uneven surfaces, including ground in varying weather conditions.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
- Work in confined spaces, as needed.
- May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist on a frequent basis.
- Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist, climb, and balance repeatedly or continually throughout shift.
- Continually works near heavy equipment, power tools, and moving machinery.
- Exposure to the outdoor environment with machinery/equipment in the surrounding area.
- Able to push/pull 80+lbs and lift/carry up 80+lbs.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment is required, including but not limited to steel-toe shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, vest, etc.
