Position Overview
Sherwood Tractor is seeking a motivated Equipment Salesperson for our Atkins location.
You will sell tractors, construction equipment, mowers, side-by-sides, implements, trailers, and related products. This is primarily a retail sales position, but successful salespeople do more than wait for walk-in traffic. You will be expected to respond to dealership leads, follow up with customers, make outbound calls, post equipment online, create simple videos, ask for referrals, and build your own customer base.
We strive to be the dealership that understands its products and connects customers with equipment that fits their property, work, and budget. Equipment knowledge is highly preferred, but it can be taught to a motivated candidate.
About Sherwood Tractor
Sherwood Tractor is an established, family-owned equipment dealership with locations in Rose Bud and Atkins. We offer multiple major equipment brands, strong dealership advertising, an existing customer database, and support from experienced ownership, management, parts, service, financing, and delivery teams.
This position reports to the Atkins Store Manager and offers substantial independence, accountability, uncapped earning potential, and possible long-term advancement.
Responsibilities
- Greet customers and assist them on the sales floor and equipment lot.
- Identify customer needs and recommend appropriate equipment and packages.
- Explain and demonstrate equipment features, capabilities, and differences.
- Prepare quotes, sales agreements, credit applications, and transaction paperwork.
- Respond to new dealership leads within two business hours when reasonably possible.
- Follow up with opportunities until they are sold or determined to be inactive.
- Document customers, equipment interests, purchasing timelines, conversations, and follow-up steps.
- Prospect through previous customers, unsold leads, referrals, calls, networking, Facebook Marketplace, and simple equipment videos.
- Inspect trade-ins and provide accurate information to management.
- Learn to value trades, negotiate, and discount within company guidelines.
- Coordinate financing, equipment preparation, attachments, service work, pickup, and delivery.
- Maintain strong communication with customers, management, parts, service, drivers, and other salespeople.
- Maintain current knowledge of inventory, promotions, financing programs, and product specifications.
- Occasionally assist with loading, unloading, securing equipment, inventory counts, shipments, and dealership events.
Dealership-generated leads are generally distributed on a round-robin basis. Leads generated through your own prospecting, relationships, referrals, or online activity generally remain yours.
Compensation
This is primarily a commission position. Commission is calculated as a percentage of gross profit, including eligible retail incentives.
- Commissions are paid monthly after qualifying deals and incentives have been fully paid.
- Additional bonuses may be available for sales volume, aged inventory, extended warranties, and other designated products.
- Canceled or unfunded transactions may result in commission adjustments.
- A draw or temporary guaranteed compensation may be available based on the candidate’s experience and preferences.
- There is no preset commission ceiling.
Established, successful salespeople can earn approximately $80,000–$120,000 per year. First-year earnings vary based on experience, equipment knowledge, prospecting, follow-up, closing ability, and customer-base development.
Training and Performance Expectations
New salespeople receive approximately three weeks of daily training covering products, software, financing, paperwork, pricing, trade-ins, demonstrations, and the dealership sales process. Most new employees require approximately three months to become comfortable with the full position.
Performance is reviewed monthly and measured through:
- Units sold and gross profit.
- Closing ratio.
- Customer satisfaction.
- Prospecting and lead follow-up.
- Accurate customer records and paperwork.
- Communication and teamwork.
Successful candidates are self-motivated, responsive, organized, competitive, and willing to take ownership of the entire transaction. This position is best suited for someone who works independently without needing repeated reminders but still communicates well with the dealership team.
Qualifications
- Previous sales, customer-service, equipment, automotive, agricultural, construction, powersports, or related experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong relationship-building and listening skills.
- Willingness to prospect and follow up consistently.
- Ability to organize multiple sales opportunities and complete accurate paperwork.
- Comfortable using computers, email, text messaging, social media, and customer-management software.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to safely operate, or quickly learn to operate, tractors, mowers, construction equipment, side-by-sides, and similar products.
- Reliable attendance and availability for the established schedule.
Preferred qualifications include three or more years of sales experience, practical equipment or mechanical knowledge, dealership experience, and some college education. Candidates with strong agriculture, construction, mechanical, or equipment experience may be considered without extensive formal sales experience.
Schedule and Work Requirements
