Company Description
The Specialists has been a cornerstone of support for New York City's creative community for over 40 years. As the East Coast's premier supplier of fabrication, graphics, and props, we serve industries spanning film and television, live theater, advertising, art, and architecture. Operating from a 60,000 square foot facility in Queens, we combine traditional craftsmanship like mold-making and blacksmithing with innovative technologies such as 3D printing and advanced programming. Our dynamic team of artists, engineers, and designers thrives on pushing the boundaries of creativity and problem-solving to deliver high-quality, cost-effective solutions. We embrace both tradition and innovation to help bring visionary ideas to life, quickly and efficiently.
Role Overview
The Specialists is seeking a skilled 3D Lab Technician to operate and maintain our additive manufacturing lab within our 60,000 sq ft fabrication facility in Ridgewood, Queens. Our 3D lab is a core production resource supporting prop fabrication, mold-making, scenic builds, graphics, and custom client work across film, television, theater, experiential marketing, and retail.
This is a hands-on, production-focused role. You'll manage a multi-machine FDM and resin print environment, own the full workflow from file prep through post-processing, and work closely with fabricators and project managers across the shop floor. The right candidate takes pride in output quality, keeps machines running, and thrives in a creative, deadline-driven environment.
Compensation: $28-35 an hour, commensurate with experience and hard skills.
Key Responsibilities
Operate and maintain FDM and SLA (resin) 3D printers in a high-volume production environment, managing print queues to meet project deadlines.
Prepare and optimize 3D print files using slicing software; assess model geometry for printability, support strategy, and material selection.
Execute all post-processing operations: support removal, IPA wash and UV cure (resin), sanding, and quality control
Perform routine and preventive maintenance on all lab equipment, including nozzle changes, bed leveling, resin vat cleaning, and firmware updates.
Troubleshoot print failures, dimensional inaccuracies, and surface quality issues; document root causes and implement corrective actions.
Collaborate with fabrication departments (wood shop, metal shop, mold shop, graphics, paint/finishing) to understand downstream use requirements and adjust print parameters accordingly.
Manage lab inventory: track resin, filament, and consumable stock levels; initiate reorders and evaluate new materials as needed.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized lab environment in accordance with OSHA and shop safety standards, including proper handling and disposal of resin and IPA.
Assist with 3D scanning workflows and model preparation as projects require.
Contribute to ongoing process improvement — identifying opportunities to increase throughput, reduce waste, and improve output quality.
Required Qualifications
2–4 years of hands-on experience operating FDM and/or SLA/MSLA 3D printers in a production, fabrication, design studio, or similar professional environment.
Proficiency with at least one slicing platform (PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, or equivalent).
Solid understanding of 3D printing materials — PLA, ABS, flexible filaments, photopolymer resins — and their respective properties and trade-offs.
Experience with post-processing and finishing techniques for both FDM and resin prints.
Ability to read and interpret 3D model files and design intent; basic CAD skills (Fusion 360, Blender, Meshmixer, or similar) are a plus.
Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort performing hands-on equipment maintenance.
Detail-oriented with a commitment to quality; able to self-inspect and flag issues before they compound.
Ability to manage a multi-machine queue and prioritize effectively under deadline pressure.
Comfortable working in an active fabrication shop environment — collaborative, physical, and fast-paced.
