ROLE: Hard Goods Supervisor of Thrift Store
Section 1: Overview and Scope of Position
In partnership with the Manager of the Thrift Store, this position serves as the point of contact for all items coming into the store except clothing and cloth materials. This is an essential role that requires partnering with the dock supervisor to assist in bringing all non-clothing goods into the store and into their proper sections. The role calls for long periods of engaged tasks on one’s feet examining, cleaning, and pricing product as well as pull putting items on the floor and pulling them for recycling after their life cycle if not purchased.
The right candidate will possess a very strong work ethic, attention to detail, and organizational skills. They will also be able to work in a fast-paced environment and train, support volunteers and community service workers.
Section 2: Qualifications (skills, education, experience)
● At least 1-2 years in a retail goods setting with a strong preference for candidates with thrift store or discount retail experience. 2+ years’ experience preferred.
● At least 1-2 years’ experience supervising volunteers, direct reports or others.
● Skilled in communication, problem-solving, and maintaining harmonious relationships.
● Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time while pulling carts, lifting objects, setting items on shelves as well as placing/pulling product from the floor room shelves.
● Possess some sense of passion for the mission of Heart & Hand’s work helping individuals and families break the cycle of poverty and understand the Thrift Store’s role in providing direct funding support for HNH’s programs.
● Valid driver license required.
● High School diploma or GED/equivalent required.
Section 3: Responsibilities/Duties
● Be the point person to receive all incoming goods (except clothing/linens) as donations are received and at times assist with donations.
● Put all items in appropriate places to be examined, cleaned, dated, and priced so they are ready to go out on the floor.
● Move product out onto the floor, making sure the shelves are well-stocked & neatly arranged and accessible for customers
● Pull items from the floor that have been there for four weeks and replace with new product, so we keep fresh inventory for our customers.
● Use alpha carts to put all recycled goods that are pulled from the floor or do not meet our standards upon inspection
● Work on ways to improvise and improve the flow of hard goods from the point of donation to point of sale and recycling stations.
● Be a strong member of the team, willing to help others out as needed and ensuring a healthy, productive work environment among peers and volunteers in so much as your contribution and attitude is concerned.
Volunteer Supervision
● Train volunteers, CS workers, youth groups, and others as they come in to serve
● Give a proper orientation to how the station and role functions and provide clear instructions on the tasks they are assigned: carrying, arranging, inspecting for damage, pricing, and other miscellaneous tasks.
● Show volunteers how to do the job first, then observe them doing the work, and provide helpful feedback so they are able to perform tasks competently.
● Maximize volunteer experience with the understanding that volunteers are critical to the success of the thrift store
● Provide regular encouragement to volunteers as well as feedback for any issues that arise to ensure excellence in volunteer service
Other Tasks
● Arrange items in the back room to make sure the shelves stay clean and organized and that items do not languish in back room but get out onto the floor at a set rate.
● Arrange and organize shelving where items may have been moved, misplaced, etc.
● Check to see what categories of items are low and need to be replenished
● Maintain a creative problem-solving outlook to implement new systems as necessary to assure production efficiency.
● Make sure that items are tagged properly with dates and colors and pulled from the floor at the end of their cycle.
● Keep Hard goods shelves in tidy order in conjunction with rest of the Back of House team
Section 5: Working Conditions and Physical Effort
● Regular hours Tuesday–Saturday, 10:00am –6pm, 40 hours/wk
● Work is performed in a temperature-controlled environment and requires prolonged hours of standing and being on one’s feet.
● Some of the work will require lifting donation bins that weigh 30-50 lbs, moving clothing racks, and moving alpha carts that become heavy when full
Section 6: Schedule and Compensation
- Schedule: Tuesday–Saturday 9:30am–5:30pm or 10:00am-6:00pm – 40 hr/wk with some flexibility
- Salary Range: $16.00--$17.00/hr (poss. for slightly higher rate with Thrift experience)
- PTO: 2 weeks/year, Paid Holidays, Health Insurance and 403b in development at
- present
