Young Management & Consulting (YMC) is seeking motivated and safety-focused Electrical Counterpoise Technicians to support transmission line construction projects throughout the State of Georgia. This position is responsible for installing, testing, and documenting grounding systems (counterpoise) for high-voltage transmission structures to ensure electrical safety, system reliability, and compliance with utility standards.
The successful candidate will work as part of a specialized transmission construction crew performing grounding installations on newly constructed and existing transmission structures. This role requires extensive outdoor work, travel, operation of mini excavators, and the ability to safely perform physically demanding tasks in various terrain and weather conditions.
Experience operating a mini excavator is required and considered a critical function of this position.
Key ResponsibilitiesCounterpoise Installation & Grounding Systems
- Install grounding systems (counterpoise) for transmission line structures in accordance with utility standards, project specifications, and construction drawings.
- Drive and install 10-foot ground rods utilizing approved installation methods and equipment.
- Install bare copper grounding conductors, exothermic welds, grounding connections, clamps, and associated grounding components.
- Excavate trenches and grounding paths utilizing mini excavators and hand tools.
- Perform grounding system installations around transmission towers, poles, dead-end structures, and related utility infrastructure.
- Ensure all grounding components are installed at proper depths, spacing requirements, and locations as specified by project design documents.
- Assist with installation of bonding conductors and grounding systems associated with transmission and distribution facilities.
Equipment Operation
- Safely operate mini excavators on active utility construction sites and challenging terrain.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections, preventative maintenance checks, and operational assessments.
- Operate trailers, trenching equipment, compactors, generators, grounding test equipment, and various power and hand tools.
- Maintain equipment in safe operating condition and immediately report deficiencies.
- Load, unload, secure, and transport tools, materials, and equipment as required.
Grounding Testing & Quality Control
- Perform ground resistance testing and continuity testing utilizing approved testing equipment and procedures.
- Verify grounding systems meet utility and engineering requirements prior to project turnover.
- Document test results and installation records accurately and completely.
- Identify deficiencies and coordinate corrective actions when grounding systems fail to meet required specifications.
- Support utility inspections, quality audits, and project acceptance activities.
- Ensure all installations comply with applicable utility standards, National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) requirements, and project specifications.
Safety & Compliance
- Promote and maintain a strong safety culture focused on incident prevention and hazard recognition.
- Comply with all company safety programs, OSHA regulations, utility safety procedures, and site-specific requirements.
- Participate in daily job briefings, tailboard meetings, safety observations, and hazard assessments.
- Utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, near misses, and safety concerns.
- Follow excavation safety practices, utility locating procedures, and equipment operating requirements.
- Maintain compliance with environmental requirements and landowner restrictions during construction activities.
Field Operations
- Work efficiently as part of a two-person or multi-person transmission construction crew.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, grounding details, staking sheets, and work packages.
- Coordinate daily work activities with supervisors, inspectors, utility representatives, and other construction crews.
- Maintain productivity while ensuring quality workmanship and safety compliance.
- Assist with material inventory management, tool accountability, and jobsite housekeeping.
- Support project schedules by completing assigned work safely and efficiently.
Travel Requirements
- Travel extensively throughout Georgia and surrounding states as required by project assignments.
- Stay overnight near project sites when necessary.
- Work extended hours, weekends, and overtime during peak construction periods.
- Operate company vehicles and trailers safely while traveling between job sites.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of outdoor construction, utility, electrical, civil, or transmission line experience.
- Demonstrated experience operating a mini excavator is required.
- Ability to safely excavate around existing underground utilities and transmission infrastructure.
- Basic understanding of electrical grounding systems and construction practices.
- Ability to read and understand construction drawings and field layouts.
- Strong commitment to safety and quality workmanship.
- Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver materials weighing up to 80 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and uneven terrain.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to travel extensively and work away from home during the work week.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous transmission line, substation, distribution, or utility construction experience.
- Previous counterpoise installation or grounding system installation experience.
- Experience operating mini excavators in utility or heavy construction environments.
- Knowledge of grounding theory, electrical safety, and utility construction standards.
- Experience performing ground resistance testing and continuity testing.
- Experience working around energized electrical facilities.
- Distribution or transmission line crew experience.
- Utility locator or underground utility experience.
- CDL Class A or ability to obtain one.
- Experience with exothermic welding (Cadweld) systems.

Physical Requirements
