JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Director of Student Services, the Special Education Instructional Aide supports the academic, behavioral, and social development of students with special needs in individual or small-group settings. This role includes assisting in the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), supporting students’ independent living skills, and maintaining a safe, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment aligned with the mission of Irvine International Academy.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this classification
- Assist instructional personnel with the development, preparation, and presentation of learning materials and exercises, reinforcing instruction to individual students or small groups.
- Provide academic and behavioral support to students, including one-on-one tutoring, as directed by the teacher.
- Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) by addressing specific learning and developmental goals.
- Monitor and manage student behavior in the classroom, playground, and other learning environments, ensuring compliance with safety and behavioral expectations.
- Perform clerical tasks such as preparing instructional materials, maintaining attendance and progress records, and collecting and recording data on student performance.
- Assist with mobility training and the use of public transportation, ensuring the safety of students in various settings.
- Operate and assist students with adaptive equipment, assistive devices, and other specialized tools for learning and mobility.
- Escort students to and from designated locations and supervise students during community-based instruction.
- Provide personal care and self-help assistance, including toileting and hygiene tasks, as needed.
- Administer and score assessments.
- Communicate regularly with teachers, staff, and families to support student needs and progress.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly learning environment.
- Attend staff meetings and in-service training as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of: A strong understanding of child growth, development, and behavioral characteristics of students with special needs is essential. This includes familiarity with IEP goals and implementation techniques, as well as basic academic subjects such as math, reading, and language arts. Knowledge of safe practices in classroom, playground, and community settings is required. Proficiency in using adaptive equipment, assistive technologies, and standard classroom tools is critical. Additionally, effective communication skills, cultural awareness, and the ability to apply patience and tact in diverse settings are key to fostering a supportive learning environment.
Ability to: Must be able to assist with both instructional and behavioral support for individual and small groups of students. The role requires the ability to reinforce instructional and independent living skills as directed by the teacher, monitor and report on student progress and behavior, and operate classroom and assistive devices effectively. Strong 1 oral and written communication skills are essential for collaborating with students, staff, and families. The aide must demonstrate patience, adaptability, and professionalism, maintain confidentiality, and ensure a positive and inclusive learning atmosphere. Physical abilities include lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds and assisting with student mobility, while maintaining a calm and supportive demeanor.
Education: Proof of passage of the CBEST, or proof of an AA degree or higher from an accredited institution in the US or meet cut scores for ACT/SAT (ACT23 Math, 22 English; SAT-550 Math, 500 English).
Experience: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience working with children in an educational or organized setting. Experience working with individuals with special needs is preferred. Fluency in Mandarin is desirable.
Credential/Certification: Possession or, or be enrolled in training to obtain, a current first aid and CPR certificate.
WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT
Physical Demands:
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, crouching, and kneeling to assist students with special needs in classroom and outdoor settings.
- Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds; may require assistance for heavier loads.
- Physical strength and agility to assist students with mobility, including pushing wheelchairs or helping with adaptive equipment.
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate instructional tools, assistive devices, and classroom equipment.
- Visual acuity to monitor student activities and recognize signs of distress or behavioral challenges.
- Hearing and speaking to communicate clearly with students, staff, and families, including providing verbal cues and instructions.
Work Environment:
- Work is performed in indoor classroom settings and outdoor environments, such as playgrounds or community-based instruction areas.
- Exposure to moderate noise levels typical of school environments and occasional loud outbursts due to student behavior.
- Potential exposure to bodily fluids or communicable illnesses when assisting with personal hygiene or first aid.
- May encounter challenging or physically aggressive behaviors, requiring the use of de-escalation techniques and safety protocols.
- Requires adaptability to meet the diverse physical, emotional, and academic needs of students.
- May involve irregular hours to accommodate IEP meetings, training sessions, or student needs.
Pay: $21.00 - $27.40 per hour
