Position Overview
The Special Education Teacher provides individualized instruction that supports each student's academic, behavioral, social, and emotional growth. Teachers create engaging learning experiences while fostering independence, confidence, and meaningful connections with students and families. This position offers the opportunity to make a lasting impact while working within a highly collaborative educational team.
Responsibilities
Inspire Student Growth
Plan and deliver differentiated instruction aligned with students' IEPs.
Adapt lessons to meet individual learning needs.
Create a positive, structured classroom environment where students feel safe, respected, and motivated.
Build Meaningful Relationships
Develop trusting relationships with students and families.
Support students' social-emotional development through positive behavior supports and crisis intervention when needed.
Foster a classroom culture built on respect, encouragement, and high expectations.
Monitor Progress
Collect and analyze academic and behavioral data to guide instruction.
Maintain accurate digital gradebooks and student records.
Prepare quarterly progress reports and communicate student growth with families.
Lead Special Education Services
Serve as an IEP Case Manager.
Develop, implement, and monitor IEP goals.
Collaborate in developing Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
Participate in PPT meetings, annual reviews, parent conferences, and transition planning.
Collaborate with a Dedicated Team
Partner with related service providers, behavior specialists, administrators, and special area teachers.
Share strategies, accommodations, and modifications to promote student success.
Participate in school events and contribute positively to our school community.
Qualifications
Required
Connecticut State Special Education Certification (065, 165, or 265)
Strong classroom management and positive behavior support skills
Experience working with students with diverse learning, behavioral, social, and emotional needs
Ability to obtain Physical Management Training (PMT) certification within 60 days of employment and maintain certification
Preferred
Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Special Education
Experience with evidence-based literacy and mathematics interventions
Knowledge of individualized instruction and data-driven decision making
