What You’ll Do (Position Description)
The Mental Health Technician provides direct patient care under the supervision of a Nurse Manager and Registered Charge Nurse. Primary responsibilities include the provision of a safe and therapeutic milieu, crisis intervention and activities of daily living. MHT’s will conduct regular safety checks on patients, assist in facilitating patient groups, assist nurses in the admission and discharge process, and support patient groups or one-on-one. Successful candidates must demonstrate leadership abilities that contribute to a positive work environment, flexibility for reassignment to various units/populations including children, adolescents, adults, older adults and dually diagnosed patients, and must know and comply with all confidentiality laws and regulation, e.g., HIPPA.
MHT’s should also demonstrate respect and understanding of patients, as well as be able to effectively engage with all levels of stakeholders, including our CEO and CNO, various departments, patients and their families.
The work is performed in a hospital/inpatient behavioral health setting, therefore, there exists a potential for exposure to environmental hazards and contagious diseases, exposure to crisis/emergency situations, and exposure to all infectious diseases including HIV/TB/Hepatitis, blood and body fluids and needle sticks.
Contributions to Team Success (Job Duties/Responsibilities)
- Ensure patient and environmental safety by conducting unit safety checks and patient rounds observations.
- Closely monitor patients on special observation status; report and record behavioral changes.
- Provide Registered Nurse with patient information to assist them in daily evaluation and planning of patient care.
- Assist patients with ADL’s, assist with meals and escorting patients as needed
- Perform patient vitals throughout the day and record data
- Perform search for contraband items; sort and organize patient belongings
- Ensure patients and environmental safety per monitoring processes, e.g., Unit Safety and Patient Rounds.
- Under the direction of the licensed professional, assist in provision of care as indicated in the interdisciplinary treatment/recovery plan.

Qualifications
What We Want To See From You! (Job Requirements/Preferred Skills)
- Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s Degree preferred; High School Diploma or recognized GED required.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in addiction or inpatient psychiatric health setting required
- Knowledge of psychiatric group processes, therapeutic relationships processes, age specific growth and development, limit setting and behavior management, crisis management with aggressive behaviors, and CPR training preferred
- Proficiency in computer-based skills
- Knowledge in patient safety preferred
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
