About The Greene SchoolThe Greene School (TGS) is a public charter high school serving approximately 200 students in grades 912 across 26 municipalities in Rhode Island. We are an EL Education (Expeditionary Learning) school with a deep commitment to environmental education, student agency, and community-connected learning. We are adding to our special education team ahead of this and this role is central to that work.The OpportunityThe Special Education Teacher at TGS works at the intersection of rigorous academics, individualized support, and the expeditionary learning model.
This is not a siloed role: our special education teachers are integrated instructional partners who collaborate closely with content teachers, related service providers, and families to ensure students with disabilities access meaningful, high-quality learning experiences.As we prepare for expansion into grades 68, this hire will help us strengthen our 912 special education infrastructure while contributing to the development of practices and systems that will serve our broader 612 community. The right candidate sees the expansion as an asset and is energized by the opportunity to help build something lasting.Key ResponsibilitiesIndividualized Education Programs & ComplianceDevelop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to each students needs, strengths, and goalsAdminister assessments, including transition assessments, to inform IEP development, progress monitoring, and instructional planningParticipate in eligibility meetings, IEP meetings, parent conferences, and team meetingsMaintain accurate, organized records in compliance with district, state, and federal guidelines (IDEA and Rhode Island special education regulations)Complete monthly Medicaid Case Management logging for services providedInstruction & Student SupportDeliver differentiated, research-based instruction in academic, functional, and/or behavioral skills across various settingsMonitor and document student progress toward IEP goals and objectives; communicate progress regularly with families and IEP teamsSupport students in developing social, emotional, and behavioral skills alongside academic growthDevelop and implement behavioral and support plans in collaboration with the school psychologist and/or social worker as neededExhibit proficiency or demonstrated awareness of the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy practices, consistent with the Rhode Island Right to Read ActCollaboration & School CommunityPartner with general education teachers to integrate special education supports into expedition-based and project-based learningCollaborate with related service providers, support staff, and administrators to implement IEPs effectivelyProvide supervision, direction, and support to paraprofessionals or support staff assigned to the classroomBuild and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with students, families, and the broader TGS communityEngage with outside agency partners, including O.R.S. and B.H.D.D.H., in support of student transition planningEngage in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices and legal mandates in special educationQualificationsRequiredBachelors Degree in Special EducationValid Rhode Island Teaching Certification as a Special Educator in the area of the position postedKnowledge of IDEA and Rhode Island state special education regulationsDemonstrated ability to write effective, data-driven IEPsKnowledge of the school-to-career transition process in Rhode IslandStrong communication, collaboration, and organizational skillsAbility to work with outside agency partners, including ORS and BHDDHPreferredExperience working with students with a range of disabilities, including Specific Learning Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Emotional Disturbance, and developmental delaysFamiliarity with the EL Education model, Expeditionary Learning, or project-based learning environmentsExperience supporting transition-age youth (grades 912)Interest in contributing to the design and build-out of a 612 special education programWho Were Looking ForYou believe that students with disabilities deserve access to the same rigorous, meaningful learning experiences as their peers.
