Position Statement
This position involves managing and mentoring a team of Laboratory Assistants that perform phlebotomy, specimen collection, specimen processing, EKGs, and point-of-care testing. The Phlebotomy Supervisor must understand all fundamental phlebotomy and nonblood specimen collection procedures and ensure professional standards are always maintained within the team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Able to perform all duties of a Laboratory Assistant.
- Train or supervise the training of all Laboratory Assistants.
- Monitor and evaluate phlebotomy team performance and provide feedback and coaching as needed.
- Schedule all Laboratory Assistants to ensure adequate coverage. Coordinate staffing difficulties with Director.
- Assure compliance with department policies and procedures for quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
- Monitor appropriate logs to ensure manual billing for pathology and cfDNA is performed in a timely manner.
- Monitor pediatric EKGs in cardiovascular application of EHR to ensure providers have interpreted and signed all tracings in a timely manner.
- Conduct monthly Laboratory Environment of Care (EOC) survey for Medical Director review.
- Collect and package specimens for DNA Diagnostics Center.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- High school education or equivalent.
- Phlebotomy Certification from a nationally recognized agency with a minimum of 5 years phlebotomy experience.
- BLS or EKG certification preferred.
- Computer entry or word processing skills required.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology.
- Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well under pressure and handle difficult situations with empathy and professionalism.
