Summary
The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects, with a focus on earthwork, grading, excavation, and site development. This role analyzes plans, specifications, and other documentation to determine project scope, quantities, and pricing, supporting the company's efforts to secure profitable work.
Key Responsibilities
- Review project plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, and bid documents to understand scope and requirements.
- Perform quantity takeoffs for earthwork, excavation, grading, utilities, and related civil components.
- Solicit and elevate subcontractor and supplier quotes.
- Analyze project risks, site conditions, and logistical challenges.
- Prepare bids proposals, including pricing summaries and supporting documentation.
- Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client discussions as needed.
- Maintain and update cost databases, historical data, and estimating tools.
- Assist in value engineering and alternative analysis to improve competitiveness.
- Support handoff of awarded projects to operations team.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 3-5+ years of estimating experience in heavy civil construction, specifically earthwork/sitework.
- Strong understanding of excavation, grading, mass earthwork balancing, and soil conditions.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Agtek, Autodesk, or similar)
- Advanced skills in Excel and quantity takeoff tools.
- Knowledge of construction means, methods, and equipment utilization.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and time management abilities.
