Family Promise of Tualatin Valley (FPTV) is seeking a dependable and capable Maintenance Specialist to help maintain our shelter facility and grounds in Tigard. Our facility operates in a large former hotel and provides temporary housing and supportive services for families experiencing homelessness. The position is a 32-hour per week position, but is considered full-time for benefit purposes.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with 1–2 years of general maintenance, facilities, construction, property maintenance, or similar hands-on experience who wants to continue developing their skills. We are not looking for a master tradesperson, but we do need someone who is comfortable using tools, troubleshooting basic maintenance problems, completing repairs independently within their skill level, and recognizing when an issue needs to be escalated.
The Maintenance Specialist performs routine building maintenance, repairs, preventive maintenance, inspections, room preparation, and groundskeeping. Work may include basic plumbing and electrical repairs, painting and drywall repair, minor carpentry, hardware and fixture replacement, equipment maintenance, landscaping, cleanup, and other general facility needs.
Because our building is also a 24-hour family shelter, successful candidates must be able to perform maintenance work respectfully around children, families, staff, and community partners while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and minimizing disruption to shelter operations.
What You'll Do
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs throughout a large, multi-story former hotel property.
- Troubleshoot and complete basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, drywall, painting, hardware, and fixture repairs within your training and skill level.
- Complete preventive maintenance tasks and routine building and equipment inspections.
- Assist with preparing guest rooms for occupancy, including minor repairs, painting, fixture replacement, and general room maintenance.
- Respond to maintenance requests and help identify practical solutions to everyday facility problems.
- Perform basic landscaping and grounds maintenance, including cleanup, vegetation management, seasonal tasks, and maintaining exterior areas.
- Safely operate common hand tools, power tools, ladders, maintenance equipment, and groundskeeping equipment.
- Assist with moving furniture, supplies, equipment, and other materials.
- Identify building or equipment conditions requiring specialized repair and promptly communicate concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
- Maintain basic records of completed repairs, inspections, preventive maintenance, and equipment servicing.
- Follow established safety procedures and properly use personal protective equipment.
- Maintain clean and organized maintenance work areas, tools, equipment, and storage spaces.
- Coordinate respectfully with shelter staff and guests when completing work in occupied rooms and common areas.
- Help maintain a facility that is safe, functional, clean, and welcoming for the families we serve.
- Perform other facility and grounds-related duties as needed in a dynamic shelter environment.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
- Approximately 1–2 years of experience in building maintenance, apartment or hotel maintenance, facilities, construction, landscaping, property management, or a similar hands-on role.
- Basic working knowledge of general building maintenance and repair.
- Experience with some combination of plumbing, electrical, painting, drywall, carpentry, hardware, fixtures, landscaping, or similar work.
- Comfortable safely using common hand and power tools.
- Ability to troubleshoot routine problems, determine reasonable next steps, and recognize when a repair is beyond your experience or authority.
- Dependable, organized, and able to complete assigned work with limited day-to-day supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to completing work safely and correctly.
- Ability to prioritize multiple maintenance needs in an active facility.
- Clear and professional verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to interact patiently and respectfully with families, children, coworkers, vendors, and community partners.
- Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and respect guest privacy while working in residential areas.
- Comfortable working independently for extended periods once onboarding and training process complete
- Basic computer skills sufficient to use email, Microsoft 365 applications, and electronic maintenance or recordkeeping systems.
- Ability to pass required pre-employment screening, including a background check and drug screen. Due to federal funding requirements, drug use, including marijuana, is prohibited during employment.
- Must be at least 18 years old, have a valid driver's license, and have reliable transportation.
Desired Qualifications
- Previous experience in hotel, apartment, multifamily housing, shelter, nonprofit, school, healthcare, or other occupied-facility maintenance.
- Experience with landscaping or groundskeeping equipment.
- CPR/First Aid certification.
- Narcan training or certification.
- Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus.
Schedule
This is a 32-hour-per-week position, considered full-time for benefits purposes.
The preferred schedule is four 8-hour day shifts, Friday through Monday. Saturday and Sunday availability is required; the remaining workdays may be negotiable.

Physical Demands
This is an active, hands-on maintenance position. The employee must be able to regularly move throughout a large, multi-story facility and exterior grounds and perform maintenance work in guest rooms, offices, mechanical and storage areas, common spaces, and outdoor environments.
The position regularly requires walking, standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, reaching, climbing stairs, and working in confined or awkward spaces. The employee must be able to safely use ladders and common maintenance equipment and tools.
The position requires the ability to routinely lift and carry tools, supplies, equipment, and materials and to independently lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance or appropriate equipment used for heavier or awkward loads.
Work requires sufficient manual dexterity and visual acuity to safely operate tools and equipment, inspect building components, diagnose maintenance problems, and perform repairs.

Work Environment
Work is performed throughout an active, 24-hour family shelter located in a former hotel property, as well as on the surrounding grounds.
The Maintenance Specialist may work in occupied and unoccupied guest rooms, offices, hallways, kitchens and common areas, maintenance and storage spaces, exterior grounds, parking areas, and other building areas. Work may involve exposure to dust, dirt, cleaning products, paint and maintenance materials, noise, temperature variations, wet conditions, and seasonal outdoor weather.
The position requires frequent interaction with staff and may involve working near shelter guests, including children. Employees are expected to perform their work professionally and respectfully while protecting guest privacy, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and minimizing disruption to shelter operations.
Pay: $22.00 - $24.00 per hour
