Position Summary
The Fleet Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the inspection, maintenance, repair, and safe operation of the Street & Sanitation Department’s fleet of vehicles, heavy equipment, and related assets. This position manages the fleet maintenance program, supervises fleet maintenance personnel, ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, and supports department operations, including emergency response and winter operations.
Essential Job Functions (include but are not limited to)
- Plans, prioritizes, assigns, and oversees preventive and corrective maintenance of city-owned vehicles, heavy equipment, and small engines.
- Inspects, diagnoses, repairs, rebuilds, and maintains gasoline, diesel, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and computerized vehicle systems.
- Develops and administers preventive maintenance schedules and maintains accurate maintenance and repair records.
- Coordinates repairs with other city departments, outside vendors, and manufacturers.
- Maintains inventory of parts, tools, fuels, fluids, and shop supplies.
- Ensures the maintenance facility complies with OSHA safety standards and safe work practices.
- Operates commercial vehicles and heavy equipment as needed.
- Participates in snow and ice removal, emergency response, and other department operations.
- Promotes a culture of safety and accountability.
- Prepares reports, recommends fleet replacement schedules, and assists with budgeting.
- Supervises assigned fleet maintenance employees.
- Assigns and monitors work, provides technical guidance and training.
- Participates in hiring, coaching, performance evaluations, and corrective action.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Skills/Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent. Associate degree or technical certification in Diesel Technology, Automotive Technology, or Heavy Equipment Mechanics is preferred.
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in fleet maintenance, diesel mechanics, or heavy equipment repair.
- Demonstrated experience diagnosing and repairing municipal or commercial fleet equipment.
- Ability to read technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and repair documentation.
- Experience with computerized fleet management software.
- Knowledge of diesel, gasoline, hydraulic, electrical, and computerized vehicle systems.
- Knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and applicable environmental regulations.
- Skill in troubleshooting mechanical and electrical failures.
- Ability to supervise staff and manage priorities. Two (2) or more years of supervisory experience is preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively with employees, vendors, and the public.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and fleet maintenance software.
Work Schedule
This position is based on a standard workweek, Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm. Occasionally this position requires attendance at work sessions or team collaborations that fall outside the typical schedule. Evening, weekend, holiday, overtime, on-call, and emergency response work may be required, including participation in snow and ice operations. Flexibility in these situations is necessary as it contributes to our commitment to our customer’s satisfaction and project success. Regular, predictable attendance is required.
Work Environment
Work is performed primarily in a fleet maintenance garage and outdoors. The position is regularly exposed to moving vehicles, machinery, weather extremes, noise, vibration, fuels, oils, solvents, dust, and other maintenance-related hazards.
