Paramedic Coordinator

FirstMed Ambulance Services is seeking an experienced, highly organized, and compliance-focused Paramedic Coordinator to lead and oversee the company's Advanced Life Support (ALS) program in Los Angeles County.
This is a key management and regulatory position responsible for maintaining the clinical, operational, and regulatory integrity of FirstMed's paramedic program. The Paramedic Coordinator will serve as the company's primary liaison with the Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency (LA County EMS Agency) and the company's assigned base hospital, while working closely with the Provider Agency Medical Director, executive leadership, Operations, Quality Improvement, Training, and field personnel.
The successful candidate must possess strong knowledge of Los Angeles County EMS policies and procedures and have the organizational discipline necessary to manage regulatory deadlines, paramedic credentials, ALS unit readiness, clinical compliance, quality improvement, and EMS Agency requirements.
Primary Regulatory Role
In accordance with Los Angeles County EMS Agency requirements for authorized paramedic providers, the Paramedic Coordinator will:
- Serve as the designated Paramedic Coordinator and liaison between FirstMed Ambulance, the Los Angeles County EMS Agency, and the assigned base hospital.
- Attend required Los Angeles County EMS Agency Paramedic Coordinator Orientation, including completion within the timeframe required by the EMS Agency following appointment.
- Maintain regular professional communication with LA County EMS Agency representatives and the assigned base hospital.
- Coordinate implementation of EMS Agency requirements, policy changes, clinical directives, and ALS program requirements throughout the organization.
- Assist FirstMed in maintaining continued compliance with its Los Angeles County paramedic provider authorization and applicable EMT-Paramedic Service Provider Agreement.
- Prepare the organization for EMS Agency surveys, site reviews, field observations, inspections, audits, and other regulatory reviews.
ALS Program Oversight
The Paramedic Coordinator will have primary responsibility for oversight of FirstMed's ALS/Paramedic program, including:
- Monitoring the operational and clinical readiness of the company's ALS program.
- Maintaining an accurate roster of paramedics participating in the ALS program.
- Monitoring California paramedic licensure, Los Angeles County accreditation, required certifications, renewals, expirations, continuing education, and other credentialing requirements.
- Ensuring paramedics assigned to ALS functions possess the licensing, accreditation, training, and credentials required for their assignments.
- Coordinating with Operations regarding appropriate paramedic staffing of approved ALS units.
- Identifying credentialing or staffing deficiencies before they result in an ALS unit being placed out of service or create regulatory exposure.
- Maintaining documentation demonstrating compliance with applicable EMS Agency requirements.
EMS Agency & Base Hospital Coordination
The Paramedic Coordinator will:
- Act as FirstMed's primary day-to-day contact with its assigned base hospital for matters involving the paramedic program.
- Coordinate required base-hospital orientation for ALS personnel.
- Ensure personnel involved in the ALS program are appropriately oriented to the operations and requirements of the assigned base hospital.
- Coordinate EMS Patient Care Record training and other required EMS Agency or base-hospital education.
- Communicate clinical, regulatory, operational, and documentation concerns between FirstMed, the EMS Agency, the base hospital, and company leadership.
- Participate in provider meetings, EMS Agency meetings, training sessions, committees, or conferences when required or appropriate.
Quality Improvement & Clinical Oversight
Working with the Provider Agency Medical Director and the company's Quality Improvement program, the Paramedic Coordinator will:
- Participate in development, implementation, and maintenance of the company's EMS Quality Improvement Plan.
- Conduct or coordinate review of ALS patient care reports, clinical incidents, unusual occurrences, complaints, medication issues, protocol deviations, and patient-care concerns.
- Identify clinical trends, documentation deficiencies, training needs, and opportunities for improvement.
- Coordinate corrective education, remediation, competency evaluation, or other clinical follow-up when appropriate.
- Provide clinical and operational findings to the Medical Director and executive leadership.
- Assist with preparation of reports and documentation required by the Los Angeles County EMS Agency.
- Promote continuous improvement in patient care, documentation, clinical performance, and protocol compliance.
ALS Equipment, Medications & Unit Readiness
The Paramedic Coordinator will assist in ensuring that each ALS unit maintains the equipment, medical devices, supplies, and pharmaceuticals required by applicable Los Angeles County EMS Agency policies.
Responsibilities include:
- Monitoring ALS unit medical-equipment and pharmaceutical readiness.
- Coordinating with Operations, Fleet, Logistics, and the Provider Agency Medical Director regarding ALS equipment and medication requirements.
- Ensuring ALS units are maintained fully stocked and clinically ready for deployment.
- Assisting with preparation for Los Angeles County EMS Agency ALS unit inventory inspections.
- Ensuring new or modified ALS units are not placed into ALS service until required EMS Agency inspections and approvals have been completed.
- Maintaining or overseeing required ALS inventory records and inspection documentation.
- Monitoring compliance with applicable supply and resupply requirements.
Controlled Substance Program
In coordination with the Provider Agency Medical Director and company leadership, the Paramedic Coordinator will assist with oversight of the organization's controlled-substance program, including:
- Ensuring controlled medications are procured, stored, secured, distributed, tracked, and accounted for in accordance with company policy and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Ensuring established procedures are followed for lost, broken, damaged, missing, expired, or tampered controlled substances.
- Reviewing controlled-substance discrepancies and coordinating investigations and corrective action when necessary.
- Ensuring required controlled-substance documentation and records are maintained.
- Working with the Provider Agency Medical Director regarding medication-program compliance.
ALS Unit Authorization & Program Changes
The Paramedic Coordinator will assist company leadership with regulatory requirements involving changes to the ALS program, including:
- Addition of ALS or reserve units.
- Relocation of approved ALS units.
- Changes to ALS unit configuration.
- Reduction or modification of ALS resources.
- Preparation for EMS Agency inspections before new ALS resources are deployed.
- Maintenance of accurate information regarding ALS unit numbers, locations, and contact information.
- Ensuring required EMS Agency notification and approval occurs before regulated program changes are implemented.
Training & Competency
The Paramedic Coordinator will work with Training and Quality Improvement personnel to:
- Coordinate initial and ongoing paramedic education.
- Identify clinical competency and performance deficiencies.
- Develop or coordinate remedial training when necessary.
- Ensure paramedics receive education regarding revisions to LA County EMS policies, treatment protocols, documentation requirements, and scope of practice.
- Support continuing education and clinical competency programs.
- Participate in paramedic orientation and field-training activities.
- Ensure personnel understand the operational requirements of the company's ALS program and assigned base hospital.
Compliance & Records Management
The Paramedic Coordinator will maintain or oversee organized records relating to:
- California paramedic licenses.
- Los Angeles County paramedic accreditations.
- Required clinical certifications.
- Continuing education.
- ALS personnel rosters.
- Base-hospital orientation.
- EMS Agency correspondence.
- ALS unit approvals and inspections.
- Medical equipment and medication requirements.
- Quality-improvement activities.
- Corrective training and remediation.
- Regulatory audits and inspections.
- Provider-agency requirements and agreements.
The coordinator is expected to maintain a proactive compliance system so that required licenses, accreditations, inspections, training, certifications, and regulatory obligations are addressed before expiration or delinquency.
Operational Leadership
As the company's ALS department leader, the Paramedic Coordinator will also:
- Provide leadership and professional accountability to FirstMed paramedics.
- Serve as the principal escalation point for ALS and paramedic operational issues.
- Work collaboratively with Field Supervisors and Operations leadership on paramedic staffing, deployment, clinical readiness, field concerns, and ALS availability.
- Investigate ALS-related incidents and operational concerns.
- Conduct field observations and spot checks when appropriate.
- Participate in management meetings and provide updates regarding the status of the ALS program.
- Escalate material regulatory, clinical, credentialing, equipment, staffing, or compliance concerns to executive leadership.
- Assist leadership with maintaining continuous ALS operational capability and regulatory readiness.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates should possess:
- Current California Paramedic License in good standing.
- Current Los Angeles County Paramedic Accreditation, or ability to obtain/maintain accreditation as required for the position.
- Current ACLS, PALS, and CPR Certification (AHA only)
- Current Medical examiner certificate
- Valid Ambulance driver certificate
- Significant field experience as a paramedic. 911 Paramedic experience preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of Los Angeles County EMS Agency policies, procedures, treatment protocols, medical-control requirements, and paramedic scope of practice.
- Understanding of ALS provider operations and regulatory compliance.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and records-management abilities.
- Ability to independently monitor multiple regulatory deadlines and compliance requirements.
- Ability to communicate professionally with physicians, EMS Agency personnel, hospitals, management, field employees, and other healthcare professionals.
- Valid California driver's license and ability to satisfy company driving requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates with:
- Previous experience as a Paramedic Coordinator, EMS Coordinator, Clinical Coordinator, EMS Supervisor, Field Training Officer, QA/QI Coordinator, or EMS Educator.
- Previous experience working with the Los Angeles County EMS Agency.
- Experience within an authorized Los Angeles County ALS provider organization.
- Private ambulance ALS experience.
- Supervisory or management experience.
- Experience performing PCR audits and clinical case review.
- Experience with EMS Quality Improvement programs.
- Experience managing controlled-substance compliance.
- Experience preparing for regulatory inspections, audits, or EMS Agency site reviews.
- EMS instructor credentials or significant EMS education experience.
Position Expectations
This position requires a high level of reliability, attendance, organization, accountability, and follow-through.
The Paramedic Coordinator is responsible for an important portion of the company's regulatory and clinical infrastructure. Failure to timely address credentialing, regulatory correspondence, inspections, medication requirements, training obligations, or other EMS Agency requirements can jeopardize ALS operations and the company's authorization to provide paramedic services.
Accordingly, the successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to independently track deadlines, communicate concerns promptly, complete assigned regulatory responsibilities, and maintain the ALS program in a continuous state of readiness.
Position Summary
This is not simply a senior field-paramedic position.
The FirstMed Paramedic Coordinator is a clinical, regulatory, and operational leadership position responsible for helping protect the company's Los Angeles County ALS provider authorization while ensuring that paramedics, ALS units, equipment, medications, training, quality improvement, clinical documentation, and base-hospital relationships remain compliant and operationally ready.
Pay: $85,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
