Position Overview
The Church Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment throughout all Seaford Baptist Church (SBC) facilities in support of worship services, ministry programs, and community activities. This position reports to the Senior Pastor. The Premises Committee provides operational direction regarding facility maintenance and custodial priorities, while the Personnel Committee provides personnel-related oversight and support.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Performance of routine and detailed cleaning of assigned areas to include:
- Restrooms throughout the facility
- Family Life Center and common areas
- Classrooms in all wings
- Kitchen areas
- Office spaces and conference rooms
- Multipurpose rooms, library and Student Center
- Worship Center, foyers, hallways, and entrances
General cleaning responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Dust and polish furniture, chairs, desks, tables, and shelves
- Sweep, vacuum, and dust mop floors
- Clean windows, doors, walls, and woodwork
- Operate carpet shampooers, vacuums, and other cleaning equipment
- Clean and sanitize restrooms and restock supplies
- Collect and dispose of trash and replace liners
- Maintain cleaning supply inventory and use materials efficiently
Follow all safety procedures and properly handle cleaning chemicals and equipment. Respond to emergency cleaning needs as required.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment to include the operation of cleaning equipment such as vacuums.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, methods and techniques associated with the use of hazardous chemicals and common cleaning equipment.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently.
- Ability to use logic, reasoning, and sound judgment to evaluate situations and make appropriate decisions.
- Ability to listen and understand directions, information and ideas presented verbally or in writing.
- Excellent listening and communication skills.
- Ability to develop and maintain positive, professional relationships with staff, church members and guests.
- Ability to respond professionally and effectively to routine inquiries from staff, church members, and visitors.
Minimum Qualifications
- Two (2) years of custodial, janitorial, or related experience preferred.
- Active relationship with Jesus Christ sustained through the practice of personal spiritual disciplines; consistently models Christian character.
- Personally engaged with Seaford Baptist’s mission and identity; supportive of Seaford Baptist’s beliefs, values, and practices.
- Able to work twenty-nine (29) hours per week; schedule may include Sundays and certain holidays as required workdays.
- Must successfully complete a background check.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, and standing for extended periods.
- Ability to operate heavy cleaning equipment.
Additional Expectations
- Maintain a flexible schedule to support special events and ministry needs.
- May assist with the setup and breakdown of tables, chairs, and equipment for worship services, ministry activities, and special events as needed.
- Conduct oneself in accordance with Seaford Baptist Personnel Handbook.
Pay: Up to $16.50 per hour
