Job Purpose:
- The Peer Support Specialist at LIFESTREAM BEHAVIORAL CENTER is responsible for providing support, encouragement, and guidance to individuals experiencing mental health challenges. The role involves leveraging personal experiences with mental health recovery to inspire hope and motivate clients towards achieving their personal recovery goals. The Peer Support Specialist acts as a role model and advocate, promoting self-determination and empowerment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one peer support and mentoring to clients, utilizing personal experiences to offer empathy and understanding.
- Assist clients in developing recovery plans and setting achievable goals, while encouraging self-advocacy and personal responsibility.
- Facilitate peer support groups and workshops, fostering a supportive community environment.
- Collaborate with clinical staff to ensure comprehensive care and support for clients.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of client interactions and progress.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Advocate for clients' needs and rights within the organization and the broader community.
- Educate clients and their families about available resources and services, providing guidance on navigating the mental health system.
- Promote a recovery-oriented approach in all interactions, encouraging hope and resilience.
Required Education:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
- Completion of a Peer Support Specialist certification program is preferred.
Required Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a mental health or substance use disorder setting.
- Personal experience with recovery from mental health or substance use challenges is highly valued.
- Experience working in a team-oriented environment, preferably in a behavioral health setting.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with clients and colleagues.
- Ability to use personal recovery experiences to support and inspire others in their recovery journey.
- Proficiency in maintaining confidentiality and adhering to ethical standards.
- Capability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and electronic health records.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain professional boundaries and foster a supportive environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
