District-Wide Chairperson - Special Education (Anticipated)
Location: Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District
Schools: Calhoun High School
Reports To: Director and Assistant Director of Special Education; Asst. Supt. of Curriculum and Instruction; Building Principal
Supervises: Classroom Teachers and Related Service Providers
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a member of the principal's cabinet.
- Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and New York State Education Department (NYSED) regulations.
- Oversee IEP development, review, and implementation.
- Chair or participate in CSE (Committee on Special Education) meetings as assigned.
- Monitor timelines, documentation, and service delivery requirements.
- Assist in scheduling of students with disabilities and staff assignments.
- Coordinate state testing accommodations and ensure proper administration.
- Maintain accurate records and reports in compliance with district and state requirements.
- Maintain strong communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress and services.
- Facilitate meetings with families and outside agencies.
- Serve as a liaison between school administration, staff, and families.
- Conduct regular department meetings to facilitate communication and collaboration among faculty.
- Implement the systems of evaluation and supervision of instruction developed by the District (APPR). This includes, but isn't limited to observation, report preparation, conferencing, assisting and providing instructional leadership.
- Support the development of curriculum, assessments, and instructional strategies that enhance student engagement and achievement.
- Collaborate with other special education District Chairpersons to ensure compliance across the district.
- Facilitate professional development workshops and training sessions for teachers and related service providers on best practices, curriculum updates, and emerging educational technologies.
- Manage a budget, oversee purchasing of instructional materials.
- Support the implementation of instructional technology and digital learning platforms.
- Participate in the selection, mentoring, and supervision of new teachers and staff within the special education department.
Job Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Valid New York State Certification in Special Education
- Administrative Certification (SBL or SDL) or active enrollment in a program leading to certification
- Minimum 5 years of successful teaching experience in special education
- Demonstrated knowledge of NYS special education laws and regulations
- Prior leadership experience (e.g., department chair, team leader, CSE chairperson)
- Experience with high school programming, Regents requirements, and transition planning
- Strong background in inclusive practices and co-teaching models
- Experience with data analysis and progress monitoring systems
