Assistant Controller
M.M. Schranz Roofing, Inc. is a family-owned industry leader in commercial roofing services, serving Wisconsin since 1907. We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Assistant Controller to join our financial leadership team. This role is critical in ensuring the accuracy of our financial operations and compliance with complex construction industry requirements.
Job Summary
The Assistant Controller will work closely with the Controller and executive team to oversee daily accounting operations, manage financial reporting, and ensure strict adherence to union and regulatory standards. This is a key succession-planning role; the incoming Assistant Controller will work under the direct mentorship of our current Controller with the intent of transitioning into the Controller position in the future. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in construction accounting, project-based financial management, and a high degree of technical proficiency in Excel and ERP systems.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Oversight & Reporting
- Prepare and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and accrual calculations.
- Assist in cash flow forecasting and monitoring bank and credit card statements.
- Coordinate internal and external audits to ensure compliance with regulatory standards as directed by the Controller.
Compliance & Union Reporting
- Lead the preparation and submission of monthly union reports and benefit filings.
- Oversee Affirmative Action (AA) plan compliance and workforce development program reporting.
Operations Support
- Assist with the accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR) functions, providing mentorship to staff.
- Collaborate with Project Managers on job costing, billing status, and contract requirements.
- Assist in payroll processing, specifically addressing complexities such as apprentice rates and union-specific pay scales.
- Review and process lien waivers, COIs, and W-9s for subcontractors and vendors.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
Experience
5-8+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
Industry Knowledge
Significant experience in construction accounting and union environments is recommended.
Technical Skills
Advanced Microsoft Excel and proficiency in ERP software (Procore preferred).
Communication
Excellent written and verbal skills for effective management and stakeholder updates.
