75 Robinson Ave., Barberton, OH 44203
Department: Physical Testing Department
Position Summary:
Akron Rubber Development Laboratory, Inc., an industry-leading testing laboratory for rubber, plastic and latex, is seeking a Sample Prep Technician who has a passion for solving problems. This position would report directly to the Physical Testing Manager.
We’re looking for someone who likes working with their hands, figuring things out, and isn’t afraid to tear something apart to get the job done.
This is a hands-on role where you’ll take real rubber and plastic parts—sometimes simple, sometimes weird shapes bonded to metal or fabric—and break them down into clean, uniform test samples.
You’re part maker, part destroyer.
What You’ll Do
- Cut, skive, and band-saw rubber and plastic parts into standard test pieces (rectangles, strips, “dog-bone” samples)
- Take apart tough or odd-shaped materials and figure out how to make them usable
- Turn messy, irregular parts into precise, clean samples ready for testing
- Run basic tests (we’ll train you):
- Salt spray (corrosion)
- Drop testing (impact / puncture)
- Carbon arc (weathering)
- Conveyor belt (strength / break)
What We’re Looking For (Required Capabilities):
- Someone who likes working with their hands
- Strong problem solver—you don’t quit when it gets tricky
- Willing to ask questions and figure it out
- Good attention to detail
- Shows up with energy and a good attitude
Education/Preferred Experience:
No degree needed. Experience in a shop, trades, or machining is a plus (we can teach the rest).
Why This Job Works for the Right Person:
If you like:
- Taking things apart
- Working with tools and materials
- Solving problems on the fly
You’ll do well here.
