Position Overview
The PPE Inspection, Cleaning & Repair Technician performs advanced inspection, cleaning, and structural repair of firefighter turnout gear and personal protective equipment in accordance with NFPA 1851 standards. This skilled position requires certification in turnout gear inspection and repair, mechanical aptitude, and attention to detail. Cross-training in customer service and operational coordination is provided to ensure comprehensive understanding of the business and ability to support front-office functions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Inspection Services (30%)
· Conduct NFPA 1851-compliant Advanced Inspections on turnout coats, pants, hoods, and gloves
· Document inspection findings using standardized forms and digital systems
· Identify damage, contamination, and signs of degradation
· Evaluate thermal liners, moisture barriers, and outer shell materials
· Assess trim, reflective materials, hardware, and closure systems
· Make retirement recommendations when gear no longer meets NFPA standards
· Photograph damage and maintain digital inspection records
· Complete individual garment documentation and history logs
· Measure and record garment specifications for sizing and fit issues
Cleaning Operations (25%)
· Operate industrial washing equipment for turnout gear decontamination
· Execute NFPA 1851 advanced cleaning procedures
· Monitor water temperature, detergent concentration, and cycle times
· Inspect gear post-cleaning for remaining contamination
· Operate gear dryers and manage drying procedures (max 105°F)
· Maintain cleaning equipment and ensure proper calibration
· Follow manufacturer-approved cleaning protocols for specific brands
· Manage separation of contaminated and clean areas
· Maintain clean room standards and contamination control
Repair Services (35%)
· Perform structural repairs on turnout coats and pants (thread repairs, seam reinforcement)
· Replace damaged hardware (D-rings, buckles, snaps, Velcro)
· Repair or replace trim and reflective materials
· Execute moisture barrier repairs using heat-sealing equipment
· Operate industrial sewing machines (walking foot, heavy-duty)
· Replace liners, wristlets, collars, and other components
· Install manufacturer-specified parts and materials
· Maintain repair quality standards that preserve garment certifications
· Document all repairs performed and materials used
· Verify repair integrity through inspection and testing
Cross-Training / Customer Interface (10%)
· Communicate with customers regarding repair recommendations and costs
· Provide turnaround time estimates and service updates
· Explain technical findings to fire department personnel
· Assist with gear intake and documentation during high-volume periods
· Support customer education on NFPA 1851 requirements and gear care
· Participate in customer facility visits for on-site consultations
· Learn basic operations management and scheduling procedures
· Assist with parts inventory management and ordering
Required Qualifications
Education & Certification
· High school diploma or equivalent (required)
· Technical/trade school training in sewing, textiles, or related field (preferred)
· NFPA 1851 Advanced or Master level certification (required within 6 months of hire)
· Manufacturer ISP certification for primary brands serviced (Globe, Lion, Morning Pride, etc.) - must obtain within 6 months
· OSHA Hazardous Materials Awareness training (provided)
Experience
· 1+ years industrial sewing, garment repair, or textile work (preferred)
· Experience with heavy-duty materials (leather, canvas, synthetics) strongly preferred
· Fire service background helpful but not required
· Mechanical aptitude and hands-on technical skills required

· Ability to work in industrial environment with noise, heat, and humidity
· Ability to wear respiratory protection and other PPE when handling contaminated gear
· Fine motor skills for precision sewing and repair work
Working Conditions
