Project Accountant
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Work Environment: Office-based with occasional visits to project sites and collaboration with project teams throughout the Western Region and the NY-based Controller and Accounting team.

Position Summary
The Project Accountant is responsible for the financial administration and accounting support of multiple construction projects. This role maintains project financial records, ensures billing accuracy, manages job-cost reporting, and supports project cash flow and profitability through disciplined financial controls.
Working closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, and company leadership, the Project Accountant serves as the primary financial resource supporting project operations.
Key Responsibilities
Project Accounting & Job Cost Management
· Establish and maintain project budgets, cost codes, and job cost reports within the accounting system.
· Monitor project costs, expenditures and commitments against approved budgets.
· Prepare and distribute project cost reports for project teams and leadership.
· Support monthly forecasting and Cost-to-Complete reporting.
· Reconcile project financial activity and investigate discrepancies.
· Maintain accurate project financial records throughout the project lifecycle.
Accounts Payable & Commitment Management
· Process subcontractor, vendor, and consultant invoices.
· Verify proper coding, approvals, and supporting documentation.
· Coordinate invoice approvals with project teams.
· Maintain subcontract, purchase order, and commitment records.
· Track contract balances and committed costs.
· Ensure compliance documentation, lien releases, and insurance certificates are current prior to payment.
Client Billing & Accounts Receivable
· Prepare owner pay applications and client invoices.
· Maintain billing schedules and supporting documentation.
· Track receivables, retention balances, and collections.
· Assist with collection efforts and payment follow-up.
· Support positive project cash flow through timely and accurate billing practices.
Change Order Accounting
· Maintain financial records associated with change orders.
· Track approved, pending, and billed changes.
· Reconcile change-order values within budgets, commitments, and contract amounts.
· Support Project Managers during change-order financial reviews.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
· Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end accounting processes.
· Assist with Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting and profitability analysis.
· Prepare project financial summaries and variance reports.
· Ensure consistency and accuracy of financial data.
· Support internal controls and accounting procedures.
Systems & Process Improvement
· Maintain project accounting information within company systems.
· Support financial reporting standardization across the Western Region.
· Assist with accounting process improvements and workflow enhancements.
· Promote consistency, accuracy, and accountability in project financial management.

Qualifications
Required
· 3+ years of construction accounting or project accounting experience.
· Experience supporting multiple construction projects simultaneously.
· Strong understanding of:
o Job costing
o Construction contracts
o Commitments and purchase orders
o Change orders
o Progress billing
o Retention
o Accounts payable and accounts receivable
· Strong analytical, organizational and communication abilities.
· Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
Preferred
· Luxury residential construction experience.
· Experience with Procore, Jonas, Sage 100 Contractor or Sage 300 CRE
· Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Construction Management, or a related field.
Compensation $95,000 - $115,000 base salary plus bonus and benefits.
Pay: $95,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
