The purpose of this position is to perform repair and maintenance to the town’s sewer system. Employees in this classification are responsible for operating, but not limited to dump trucks, tractors, front-end loaders, backhoes, bobcats, rollers, lawn mowers and snow removal equipment. May prepare and maintain records; performs general maintenance on equipment. Requires 24/7 response to sewer emergencies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Conducts town’s sewer infrastructure repair and maintenance.
2. Prepares and maintains records; performs general maintenance on equipment.
3. Flags traffic as needed during roads and rights-of-way maintenance.
4. Assists in CCTV inspections of sewer lines.
5. Assistant with cleaning sewer mains, using high-pressure jetter combo unit.
6. Maintains access to trunk lines and meter stations.
7. Checks and services flapper valves; checks air quality in confined spaces per permit requirements; performs smoke testing; assists other crews with confined space testing as needed.
8. Ensures adherence to all safety rules.
9. Assists with “Miss Utility” tickets.
10. Assists in setup and breakdown of town special events; may work at events as needed.
11. Performs snow and ice removal as needed.
12. Performs other duties as required.
Position is considered “essential personnel”; defined as staff who are required to report to their designated work location during weather-related or other emergencies, even when town offices are closed or normal operations are suspended.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED required
- One to two years’ experience and/or training in sewer (sanitary or storm) or water system maintenance preferred
- Valid Commercial driver’s license, Class B with air brakes and tanker endorsement within six months of employment
- Must be able to complete competent person training for trench safety and confined space entry within six months of employment
- Must be able to obtain both flagger certification and forklift operator license issued by the Virginia Department of Transportation within six months of employment with the town.
