Under the direction of the Director or Nurse Manager, the Lead Nurse coordinates patient flow and manages human and material resources within the department. This role supports and delivers quality care in accordance with regulatory requirements, professional standards, and evidence-based practice. The Lead Nurse demonstrates leadership by motivating, coaching, and guiding staff, resolving conflicts, and supporting management initiatives. This position also fulfills the responsibilities of a Registered Nurse.
I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Provide leadership and direction to staff, including scheduling, staffing, and patient care assignments.
2. Serve as a clinical expert and resource; assist with orientation and staff development.
3. Promote quality patient care and staff satisfaction through effective communication and resource management.
4. Coordinate and deliver patient care; supervise nursing staff and inform leadership of issues.
5. Support performance improvement initiatives and ensure compliance with policies and standards.
6. Foster a professional environment that encourages open communication and continuous learning.
II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing.
2. Current RN License in Massachusetts.
3. Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
Preferred:
1. BSN.
2. Specialty certification and membership in a professional organization.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience in current specialty.
2. Strong interpersonal, communication, leadership, and conflict management skills.
Preferred:
1. Charge or leadership experience.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
