Position Summary
Assist teachers in supporting the delivery of special education services to students with significant hearing loss. To
assist students to master class/course content by communicating with them in spoken and sign language as they
learn curriculum skills and content.
Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities
1. Assist the teacher to implement the individual IEPs for students in the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing (D/HH)
Program by working with individual students or small groups on specific units of instruction.
2. Use sign language communication to present and clarify information for students in all activities where
communication support is needed.
3. Assist in the preparation, use and care of instructional materials and educational media specifically
designed for students with hearing loss.
4. Assist the teacher by performing such tasks as duplicating instructional materials and tests, grading
student work, keeping and maintaining student records.
5. Assist the D/HH student to function successfully in mainstream classrooms.
6. Communicate oral language to each deaf student by using sign language and explain what the student
may not understand.
7. Assist students with physical needs and personal care.
8. Use universal precautions regarding health and cleanliness.
9. Attend to the academic, developmental, and behavioral progress of students, and share that information
with the teacher in the appropriate format.
10. Establish and maintain good working relationships with department staff, school personnel, students, and
parents.
11. Assist in the implementation of a behavior management system, when appropriate.
12. Assist in the supervision of students on the playground, in the lunchroom and in other campus locations,
as assigned.
13. Assist in maintaining an inventory of materials and equipment.
14. Serve as a liaison between the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program and mainstream teachers.
15. Assist hearing impaired staff members or parents by functioning strictly as a communication facilitator,
when appropriate.
