Position Overview
The Construction Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial, accounting, payroll, reporting, and compliance functions for the business. This role provides financial leadership, ensures accurate project cost tracking, oversees union payroll and fringe benefit reporting, supports operational decision-making, and maintains compliance with accounting standards, labor agreements, tax regulations, and contractual requirements.
The ideal candidate has construction industry accounting experience, understands job costing and union payroll administration, and can work closely with project managers, estimators, and company ownership in a hands-on environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Manage all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Develop and monitor company budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections.
- Analyze financial performance and provide recommendations to ownership.
- Coordinate annual financial reviews, audits, and tax preparation with external CPA firms.
- Maintain internal controls and accounting procedures.
Construction Accounting & Job Costing
- Oversee project accounting from contract award through closeout.
- Maintain accurate job cost reports and work-in-progress (WIP) schedules.
- Track labor, equipment, subcontractor, and material costs by project.
- Review project profitability and identify cost overruns or financial risks.
- Support project managers with budgeting, forecasting, and cost analysis.
- Reconcile project costs to accounting records.
Billing & Contract Administration
- Manage owner billings, progress billings, AIA applications, and change order tracking.
- Monitor retainage balances and collections.
- Review subcontractor pay applications and lien waivers.
- Ensure timely invoicing and collection of receivables.
- Assist with contract compliance and financial documentation requirements.
Payroll & Labor Compliance
- Oversee & manage the process of weekly union and non-union payroll, including reporting of union fringe benefits and prevailing wage documentation
- Maintain compliance with collective bargaining agreements.
- Support audits by unions, government agencies, and benefit funds.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor regulations.
Cash Flow & Banking
- Monitor daily cash position and working capital requirements.
- Manage banking relationships, lines of credit, and financing arrangements.
- Forecast cash needs for payroll, vendors, and project obligations.
- Review and approve disbursements.
Risk Management & Compliance
- Maintain insurance records, bonding requirements, and contractor licensing documentation.
- Assist with bond requests and financial submissions.
- Ensure compliance with tax filings, sales/use tax requirements, and regulatory reporting.
- Oversee annual business registrations and reporting obligations.
Leadership & Administration
- Supervise accounting and administrative staff as assigned.
- Develop accounting policies and best practices.
- Collaborate with ownership, project managers, estimators, and field leadership.
- Participate in strategic planning and company growth initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of accounting experience, preferably in construction.
- Strong understanding of job costing and construction financial reporting.
- Experience with union payroll and fringe benefit reporting.
- Knowledge of certified payroll and prevailing wage requirements.
- Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- 7–10 years of construction accounting experience.
- Experience in a union general contracting environment.
- CPA, CMA, or equivalent professional designation.
- Experience with construction accounting software such as Sage 100 Contractor, Sage 300 CRE, Foundation, Viewpoint, HH2, or similar systems.
- Familiarity with bonding, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion accounting.
