At Liesfeld Contractor, our Field Mechanics keep the heavy equipment behind our projects running. We are seeking an experienced Field Mechanic to provide on-site maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs for a diverse fleet of excavators, loaders, dozers, skid steers, and other heavy construction equipment supporting our site development and heavy civil operations.
This is a hands-on, mobile position focused primarily on heavy equipment service and repair in the field. The Field Mechanic travels between jobsites to diagnose equipment issues, perform preventive maintenance, respond to breakdowns, and complete repairs that keep crews productive and projects moving.
The ideal candidate is an experienced heavy equipment mechanic who can troubleshoot independently, think critically, and make quality repairs in the field while working safely around active construction operations.
Schedule
- Full-time | Monday–Saturday
- Monday–Friday: 6:00 AM–5:30 PM | Saturday: 6:00 AM–12:30 PM | Average 58+ hours per week

Key Responsibilities
- Travel to active construction jobsites to inspect, diagnose, service, and repair heavy construction equipment
- Perform preventive maintenance and routine service on excavators, loaders, dozers, skid steers, and other heavy equipment
- Diagnose and repair diesel engines, hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and drivetrain systems
- Troubleshoot equipment using diagnostic scan tools, fault codes, live data, OEM manuals, and technical resources
- Diagnose and repair DPF/DEF aftertreatment systems, including regeneration issues, sensors, and related failures
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems, including hydraulic lines, fittings, cylinders, pumps, and related components
- Perform inspections to identify equipment wear, developing issues, and upcoming maintenance needs
- Repair or replace components including filters, belts, hoses, pumps, cylinders, sensors, electrical components, and other equipment systems
- Perform track and undercarriage inspections and repairs as needed
- Perform electrical troubleshooting, wiring repairs, lighting repairs, and sensor diagnostics
- Perform engine and drivetrain repairs and component replacement
- Perform light welding and fabrication as needed
- Respond to equipment breakdowns and emergency service calls to minimize downtime
- Determine parts and materials needed for repairs and coordinate with the Parts team and Shop
- Accurately document inspections, repairs, parts used, and service activities
- Communicate equipment conditions, repair status, and recommended repairs with the Equipment Manager, Shop Foreman, operators, and field leadership
- Maintain a clean, organized, and properly equipped service truck
- Follow all company safety policies and jobsite requirements
- Perform other maintenance and repair duties as needed
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- 3–5+ years of hands-on heavy equipment mechanic experience
- Proven experience diagnosing and repairing construction equipment in a field or mobile service environment
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, drivetrains, and heavy equipment systems
- Experience using diagnostic scan tools and interpreting fault codes and live data
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to diagnose problems and complete repairs independently with limited supervision
- Ability to prioritize multiple service needs and respond to changing jobsite conditions
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Valid Virginia driver's license with a clean driving record
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with CAT, John Deere, Komatsu, Link-Belt, Volvo, Hitachi, or similar heavy equipment
- Experience with excavators, dozers, loaders, skid steers, and other construction equipment
- OEM diagnostic software experience
- Experience with hydraulic system diagnostics and repair
- Welding and fabrication experience
- CDL Class A or ability to obtain
- Experience mentoring or supporting other mechanics
- Bilingual (Spanish) skills a plus
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors at active construction jobsites in varying weather conditions
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, and perform repairs for extended periods
- Ability to safely lift, carry, push, and pull tools, parts, and components weighing 50+ pounds
- Ability to climb onto heavy equipment, ladders, steps, and platforms
- Ability to work in tight or confined areas of heavy equipment
- Ability to work around noise, dust, grease, diesel exhaust, hydraulic fluids, and operating machinery
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and service truck equipment
- Ability to consistently wear and utilize all required personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with company and safety standards
- Ability to work safely around operating equipment, vehicles, and moving machinery
- Ability to travel between active construction jobsites throughout the Greater Richmond region
