Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Building Attendant supports the daily operations, safety, security, and upkeep of the Poppleton Recreation Center. The attendant ensures the facility is clean, secure, and welcoming to youth, families, and community members while assisting with facility maintenance, program set-up, customer service, and event support. This role is essential to creating a safe, positive, and functional environment for SSFA's sports, wellness, and community programs.
This position requires a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to provide on-site facility oversight during recreational programming, community rentals, tournaments, meetings, and special events.
Essential Duties
- Opens, monitors, and secures the building during scheduled hours of operation.
- Provides on-site facility oversight during evening and weekend programs, facility rentals, tournaments, and special events to ensure safe, efficient, and professional operations.
- Provides on-site support for SSFA programs, rentals, and special events.
- Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and facility systems.
- Performs custodial and maintenance tasks including sweeping, mopping, cleaning restrooms, trash removal, and light landscaping.
- Sets up and breaks down equipment for practices, games, workshops, meetings, rentals, and community events.
- Ensures safe conditions of gymnasiums, classrooms, restrooms, outdoor play areas, and common areas.
- Monitors visitor conduct to ensure facility rules, safety policies, and rental agreements are followed.
- Maintains logs of daily activities, incidents, inspections, and supply needs.
- Communicates effectively with staff, coaches, volunteers, vendors, renters, and community members.
- Assists with emergency procedures and responds appropriately to incidents when necessary.
- Serves as the primary on-site facility representative during assigned shifts by addressing operational issues, answering visitor questions, and coordinating with program staff as needed.
Other Duties
- Supports snow removal, seasonal landscaping, and grounds care as needed.
- Provides guidance and oversight to volunteers or part-time helpers assisting with custodial or event tasks.
- Inspects work performed by vendors or contractors for compliance with SSFA standards.
- Assists with event preparation, crowd flow, facility readiness, and post-event breakdown as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by leadership.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- At least two (2) years of experience in building maintenance, facility support, custodial services, or recreation facility operations preferred.
- Experience working in recreation, school, municipal, or nonprofit community facilities is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of basic building systems (plumbing, electrical, HVAC) and custodial practices.
- Skill in the use of maintenance tools and cleaning equipment.
- Ability to perform light repairs, set up athletic and meeting equipment, and support multiple program needs.
- Strong communication and customer service skills with the ability to interact professionally with youth, families, volunteers, vendors, renters, and community partners.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and respond effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Conditions of Employment
- Must be able to perform physical labor including bending, stooping, climbing, lifting up to 50 pounds, and standing or walking for extended periods.
- Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays based on facility programming, rentals, and special events.
- Must successfully pass a background check and drug screen.
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire).
Work Environment
The Building Attendant works both indoors and outdoors in a community recreation setting. Work involves exposure to varying weather conditions, cleaning chemicals, athletic activities, and large community gatherings. The position frequently requires moving equipment, preparing event spaces, and providing facility oversight during evenings, weekends, and special events.
Compensation
$15–$16 per hour
