St. John's School is seeking to hire a Custodian! This position is expected to demonstrate reliability, initiative, attention to detail, professionalism, and a strong commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming school environment. The successful candidate will be someone who takes pride in the appearance of the campus and is willing to step in and assist with operational needs as they arise.
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, welcoming, and functional environment throughout the school campus. This position supports the daily operations of the school by ensuring classrooms, restrooms, walkways, common areas, and other facilities are clean, prepared, and ready for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
The Custodian will also assist with opening and closing duties, basic facility maintenance, and other operational needs as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Turn on air conditioning units in classrooms, offices, and other designated areas as needed.
- Open and prepare classrooms for the school day.
- Unlock and prepare classrooms for substitute teachers and other staff as requested.
- Open designated restrooms and ensure they are clean, stocked, and ready for use.
- Inspect common areas, walkways, and facilities for cleanliness and safety concerns.
Cleaning & Sanitation
- Vacuum, sweep, mop, and clean floors throughout classrooms, offices, hallways, and common areas.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, including toilets, sinks, floors, mirrors, and other fixtures.
- Refill restroom supplies, including soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and other necessary items.
- Collect, remove, and properly dispose of trash and recycling from classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas.
- Clean and maintain walkways, entrances, stairways, and other high-traffic areas.
- Dust and wipe down surfaces, furniture, fixtures, and other areas as needed.
- Respond to spills, messes, and other cleaning needs throughout the school day.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards appropriate for a school environment.
Facilities & Maintenance Support
- Assist with basic maintenance and upkeep of school facilities as needed.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Maintenance Manager or school administration.
Qualifications
- Previous custodial, janitorial, facilities, maintenance, or related experience preferred.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks throughout the day.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Strong attention to cleanliness, safety, and detail.
- Ability to safely lift, carry, push, and move supplies, equipment, and furniture.
- Ability to work around children and maintain a professional and respectful demeanor.
- Dependable, punctual, responsible, and willing to assist where needed.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekends for school events, as needed.
Physical Requirements
The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, lifting, and carrying. The employee must be able to safely operate cleaning equipment and perform routine custodial and facility-related tasks.
Standard work hours: 10:00 AM to 18:00 PM weekdays Monday through Friday.
