JOB TITLE: MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST/MEDICAL LAB TECHNICIAN
REPORTS TO: Laboratory Manager
SUPERVISORY SKILLS: None
JOB DESCRIPTION: Responsible for efficient and accurate performance of laboratory testing/reporting and assisting Laboratory Manager in day-to-day laboratory operations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES:
- Performs technical laboratory testing including, but not limited to: chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and coagulation.
- Receives lab samples, enters orders, reconciles discrepancies and processes specimens for testing.
- Reports test results following clinical protocols and procedures. Attention is paid to stat orders, “critical values” and special alerts requested by physicians.
- Ensures quality control in patient collection, handling, and results reporting.
- Accurately performs Proficiency Testing (PT).
- Maintains equipment and supplies per policy and procedures.
- Complies with all policies and OSHA regulations related to safety, cleanliness, PPE and infection control.
- Assists the Laboratory Manager as directed.
- Phlebotomy experience preferred.
- Demonstrates current competencies related to position.
- Always maintains client confidentiality.
REQUIREMENTS
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: ASCP or AMT certificationpreferred.
EDUCATION: BS/BA or Associate’s degree, successful completion of MT, MLT course of study.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of one year of laboratory experience, preferably in a clinical setting.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of medical laboratory principles, standards, applications, and tests.
- How to use/maintain laboratory equipment.
- Knowledge of safety, infection control policies, PPE use and regulations.
- Knowledge of HIPPA regulations
SKILLS:
- Follows appropriate testing procedures.
- Proper equipment uses, preventive maintenance and repair.
- Use of appropriate quality control procedures.
ABILITIES:
- Exercises independent judgment/decision-making, discretion in reporting/distributing results.
- Maintains cooperative relationships with clients and staff.
- Works and communicates with all departments and personnel in a clear, concise and professional manner.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to walk, stand, sit, bend and reach.
- Must be able to lift/carry 25 lbs.
- Must have excellent hand-eye coordination.
- Must be able to deal with occasional stress from workload.
ENVIRONMETAL/WORK CONDITIONS:
- Laboratory work setting.
- May be exposed to communicable disease, sharps, toxic substances, body fluids, fumes, hazardous materials, noise.
