Title: Environmental Technician (Herbicide Application)
Job Type: Full Time; Seasonal (up to October)
Location: 211 W. 5th St, Rifle, CO
Pay: $20.00 - $24.00 per hour DOE
Sign on Bonus: $2,000 for applicants with Colorado applicator license (paid after introductory period)
Additional Compensation: Bonus opportunities available
Travel Requirement: Up to 50% of the time
The Environmental Technician is a field-based role responsible for the safe, accurate, and environmentally compliant application of herbicides and vegetation control methods across assigned rights-of-way and contract locations. This position plays a critical role in executing vegetation management plans by translating prescriptions and work orders into consistent, high-quality field outcomes.
The Environmental Technician operates equipment, applies treatments according to label and regulatory requirements, and maintains detailed records of completed work. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, respect for safety protocols, and the ability to work independently while remaining aligned with broader program objectives.
This position serves as a foundational role within the Vegetation Management organization, ensuring operational reliability, regulatory compliance, and stewardship of client and stakeholder trust. There is a transparent career ladder pathway created to help employees with vertical movement within the company if desired.
The following is a list of possible physical capabilities and proficiencies required to fulfill the duties of this position:
- Walking up to 10-15 miles in one day
- Carrying a load of approximately 20 lbs. for long distances
- Lifting material with a weight of up to 50 lbs.
- Possess a valid Driver’s License (with clean driving record)
- Drive company vehicles in a safe and conscientious manner
- Working in extreme conditions (i.e. hot or cold weather, wind and insects)
- Able to work long hours when needed
- Comfortable working in remote conditions
- Must pass DOT medical examination and drug screening
Preferred experience:
- Colorado applicator license (107 and 109)
- Basic knowledge of regional vegetation including noxious weeds and native vegetation, additionally able to identify them in the field
- Natural resource management/habitat restoration experience
- Experience operating UTV/ATV’s in a safe manner
- Experience operating other construction equipment (tractors, skid steers, excavators)
Key Responsibilities (Clear and transparent KPIs have been created to clarify success):
1. Field Application & Task Execution
- Perform herbicide application and vegetation control activities according to work plans, prescriptions, and label requirements.
- Operate backpack, truck-mounted, UTV, and handheld application equipment safely and effectively.
- Follow daily assignments, treatment maps, and instructions provided by supervisors or project leads.
- Maintain awareness of weather, site conditions, and environmental sensitivities during application.
- Additional responsibilities include reclamation activities such as seeding, line trimming, mowing, and live planting.
- Safely operate trailers
2. Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Follow all company safety policies, PPE requirements, and job safety analyses (JSAs).
- Comply with all federal, state, and local regulations related to chemical handling and application.
- Immediately report safety hazards, near misses, or incidents to supervision.
- Maintain required applicator licenses and certifications.
3. Documentation & Reporting
- Accurately complete daily logs, application records, PARs, and electronic reporting requirements.
- Ensure treatment data is recorded clearly, completely, and submitted within required timelines.
- Assist with documentation needed for inspections, audits, or compliance reviews.
4. Equipment & Material Care
- Conduct pre- and post-use inspections of application equipment and vehicles.
- Clean, calibrate, and maintain equipment according to procedures.
- Properly handle, store, and transport herbicides and related materials.
- Report equipment issues or material shortages promptly.
5. Team Support & Professional Conduct
- Work collaboratively with crew members, supervisors, and other departments.
- Follow direction and provide feedback from field observations when appropriate.
- Represent the company professionally when interacting with landowners, inspectors, or the public.
