CDL Heavy Tow Truck Operator / Heavy Equipment Haul Operator
We are seeking a skilled CDL Heavy Tow Truck Operator / Heavy Equipment Haul Operator to join our team. This role involves operating heavy-duty tow trucks and heavy haul equipment to assist with vehicle recovery, transportation, roadside assistance, and the safe transport of heavy equipment and machinery. As a CDL Heavy Tow Truck Operator / Heavy Equipment Haul Operator, you will play a vital role in ensuring efficient vehicle recovery and heavy hauling operations while maintaining professionalism and adherence to industry standards.
Responsibilities
- Operate heavy tow trucks safely and efficiently to recover and transport vehicles.
- Transport heavy equipment, construction equipment, agricultural equipment, oversized loads, and machinery using lowboy, detach, Landoll, or other heavy haul trailers.
- Perform automotive diagnostics and basic automotive repairs as needed during roadside assistance.
- Load, unload, and secure vehicles and heavy equipment using appropriate equipment, chains, binders, straps, and securement methods in accordance with DOT cargo securement regulations.
- Inspect loads to ensure proper weight distribution and safe transport.
- Plan routes while considering bridge clearances, weight restrictions, permits, and oversized load requirements when applicable.
- Manage conflict resolution effectively when dealing with distressed customers or challenging situations.
- Conduct routine maintenance checks on tow trucks, tractors, trailers, and related equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Complete pre-trip, post-trip, and required DOT inspections.
- Provide excellent customer service by communicating clearly and professionally with clients.
- Follow all safety protocols, FMCSA regulations, and traffic laws during operations to prevent accidents or injuries.
- Assist in the training of new team members on tow truck operation, heavy hauling, and safety procedures.
Requirements
- Valid CDL Class A license with a clean driving record.
- Proven experience operating heavy-duty tow trucks, rotators, wreckers, or similar recovery vehicles.
- Experience transporting heavy equipment using lowboy, Landoll, detach, RGN, or similar heavy haul trailers is preferred.
- Mechanical knowledge with experience in automotive diagnostics and repair.
- Ability to operate manual transmissions confidently.
- Experience with automotive repair, conflict management, and customer service is preferred.
- Skilled in load and unload procedures.
- Thorough understanding of proper cargo securement techniques and DOT cargo securement regulations.
- Strong understanding of commercial driving regulations and safety standards.
- Mechanic experience is a plus for troubleshooting vehicle issues on-site.
- Ability to obtain and comply with oversize/overweight permit requirements when necessary.
- Availability for on-call, nights, weekends, and emergency response is required.
- Physical ability to lift heavy loads and perform manual tasks safely.
