Position Overview
Bartenders at The Surf Club serve as senior front-of-house professionals and act as lead service representatives during their assigned shifts. This role carries elevated responsibility for service execution, professionalism, and operational standards behind the bar. Bartenders are responsible for delivering consistently exceptional, refined, and engaging beverage service while supporting overall front-of-house flow.
Bartenders set the tone for service culture, urgency, and professionalism and are expected to exercise sound judgment in support of a positive member experience. This position carries increased authority and responsibility for service execution during assigned shifts. Bartenders are expected to take ownership of bar operations, influence front-of-house service flow, and support management by addressing real-time service needs, prioritizing member experience, and upholding Surf Club standards. Compensation for this role reflects the elevated expectations, leadership presence, and accountability required.
Key Member Service Standards
In every interaction, the Bartender will model and support staff to deliver the following:
- Warm, Sincere Greeting: Welcome every member and guest with genuine warmth, using their name whenever possible.
- Anticipation and Fulfillment of Needs: Proactively observe and assist in anticipating opportunities to meet or exceed member expectations.
- Fond Farewell: Conclude each interaction with a warm farewell, again using the member’s name whenever possible.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – SERVICE CULTURE & MEMBER EXPERIENCE
- Deliver refined, member-first hospitality in every interaction
- Demonstrate strong awareness, anticipation, and professional presence behind the bar
- Build rapport with members while maintaining appropriate boundaries
- Maintain composure, polish, and professionalism during peak volume
- Exercise sound judgment to support a positive and seamless member experience
- Escalate service concerns or member needs appropriately and promptly
EXPERIENCE & EXPECTATIONS
- TIPS Certification required
- Prior bartending experience required; private club or upscale dining experience preferred
- Strong understanding of service timing, pacing, and bar flow
- Ability to lead service execution during assigned shifts
- Ability to perform under pressure while maintaining attention to detail
- Commitment to consistency, professionalism, and high service standards
BEVERAGE EXECUTION & PRODUCT STANDARDS
- Prepare and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages accurately and efficiently
- Maintain working knowledge of cocktails, beer, wine, spirits, and current features
- Follow standardized recipes, pour controls, and presentation guidelines
- Deliver consistent quality and presentation for all beverages served
OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE & SHIFT OWNERSHIP
- Execute and verify all opening and closing bar duties
- Maintain a clean, organized, stocked, and show-ready bar throughout service
- Manage urgency, pacing, and organization during peak service periods
- Support servers and front-of-house staff to ensure smooth service execution
- Maintain consistent service standards regardless of volume or conditions
PROFESSIONALISM & LEAD ACCOUNTABILITY
- Serve as a lead example for professionalism, work ethic, and service standards
- Support front-of-house operations through presence, communication, and decision-making
- Act as a resource for servers and front-of-house teammates regarding service flow, priorities, and standards
- Function as a floor lead during assigned shifts, providing direction, prioritization, and service support
- Maintain composure, confidence, and professionalism in all situations
- Uphold Surf Club standards in appearance, behavior, and communication
- Receive feedback and guidance professionally and apply it in real time
COMMUNICATION & RESPONSIVENESS
- Communicate clearly, respectfully, and professionally with management and teammates
- Follow management direction promptly and thoroughly
- Provide timely updates regarding shortages, service challenges, or member needs
GOVERNANCE, COMPLIANCE & FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
- Follow all Surf Club policies, procedures, and alcohol service regulations
- Practice responsible alcohol service at all times
- Handle transactions, product, and inventory accurately and responsibly
- Minimize waste and protect club assets
SCHEDULE & AVAILABILITY
- Nights, weekends, holidays, and special events required
- Seasonal flexibility based on club volume and member needs
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Stand for extended periods
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Perform in a fast-paced, high-expectation service environment
ACCOUNTABILITY
Bartenders report to Pavilion and Food & Beverage Management and are accountable for service quality, shift execution, leadership presence, professionalism, compliance, and overall member experience during assigned shifts.
