Meritore is hiring three Field Service Technicians for water meter installation and field service work supporting a major regional water utility across Montgomery County and Prince George's County, Maryland. Immediate openings. Contract runs through May 2027 with four one-year option years, so this is steady, durable work.
Pay: $23.00 to $25 per hour
Additional compensation: $800 per month vehicle allowance (paid with payroll, taxable). Combined, that works out to roughly $28.60 to $31.10 per hour effective for a full-time schedule.
What you would do
- Install, replace, and perform preventive maintenance on residential and commercial water meters and remote reading devices
- Install wiring for meter reading systems
- Troubleshoot and repair electronic metering systems
- Investigate meter readings out of tolerance, perform check readings and finals
- Perform field investigations, turn-offs, and turn-ons
- Take measurements and sketch meter and curb box locations
- Complete work tickets and daily reports
Schedule
Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with one unpaid hour for lunch and breaks. Eight paid hours per day. Occasional after-hours, weekend, or holiday work may be required. Overtime paid at time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek.
What you need
- Your own work truck. A pickup with a utility body or cap, a cargo van, or a flatbed. It must carry an 8-foot valve key, curb box keys, hand and gas-powered pumps, vault ventilation equipment, safety cones, up to 30 water meters, and your tools. A sedan, SUV, or crossover will not work for this role.
- Commercial auto insurance on that truck. A personal auto policy does not qualify. We will need a certificate of insurance before your first day.
- At least one year of documented water meter experience.
- Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
- Ability to lift up to 90 pounds frequently and work outdoors in all weather, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Willingness to complete a background investigation covering work, driving, and criminal history. The utility pays for it. You do not.
Nice to have: confined space entry certification, gas monitor or atmospheric analyzer experience, OSHA 10 or 30, work zone or flagger certification, backflow or plumbing credentials, prior experience in Montgomery or Prince George's County.
Benefits and other compensation
- W2 employment. This is not a 1099 role.
- Weekly pay, direct deposit.
- $800 per month vehicle allowance.
- Paid sick and safe leave, up to 56 hours per year, accruing from your first day.
- Workers' compensation coverage.
- We do not offer group medical, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement or 401(k) plans, or paid vacation. Compensation is hourly pay, the vehicle allowance, and paid sick and safe leave as described above.
Timeline, so you know what to expect: after we submit your resume, the utility selects, then a background investigation runs, then a week of training on our side. Realistically about three to five weeks from application to your first day on the job.
We are an equal opportunity employer.
