JOB SUMMARY -
The Department of Revenue (DOR) is seeking an experienced Tax Compliance Specialistto support tax compliance, revenue collection, investigations, auditing, and taxpayer services. The selected candidate will perform technical research, analyze financial and tax records, resolve complex tax issues, conduct compliance reviews, and assist with audit and investigation activities while ensuring compliance with state and federal tax regulations.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in tax compliance, accounting, auditing, tax collection, financial analysis, and customer service, along with strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical and procedural assistance to taxpayers, taxpayer representatives, internal divisions, and other state agencies.
- Research and resolve complex issues related to tax payments, returns, assessments, and outstanding tax liabilities.
- Create tax billings and liabilities in DOR software based on court orders.
- Process penalty and interest abatements according to agency policies.
- Review taxpayer accounts to identify unpaid or unfiled tax obligations.
- Research taxpayers who have legal filing requirements but have failed to submit returns.
- Develop and manage compliance cases by reviewing financial statements, tax returns, and supporting documentation.
- Perform audit procedures and analyze financial records to determine compliance.
- Conduct detailed reviews to identify inconsistencies, irregularities, and abnormal financial trends.
- Maintain accurate records of assessments, collections, and ongoing case activities.
- Complete disclosure requests involving confidential taxpayer information while ensuring compliance with confidentiality laws.
- Collect and document evidence for investigations while maintaining proper chain of custody.
- Prepare reports and documentation supporting investigations and audit findings.
- Work collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with applicable state and federal tax laws and regulations.
Additional Responsibilities (Based on Assignment)Audit Desk
- Conduct audits and compliance reviews.
- Investigate non-filers and underreported tax liabilities.
- Perform audit testing procedures.
- Analyze audit findings and recommend corrective actions.
- Support revenue enhancement and enforcement initiatives.
Investigations & Internal Affairs
- Serve as primary case agent for assigned investigations.
- Conduct investigations from initial complaint through final resolution.
- Prepare documentation supporting administrative or legal action.
- Testify during hearings or court proceedings when required.
Required Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of state and federal tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirements.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and auditing practices.
- Experience using revenue, tax, and tracking/database systems.
- Experience managing assessments, collections, and taxpayer records.
- Ability to analyze financial statements, tax returns, and supporting documentation.
- Strong analytical, research, and investigative skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with ethics requirements.
- Strong organizational and critical thinking abilities.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
Highly Desired Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience in: Accounting, Tax Collection , Finance or Customer Service
- Experience applying state and federal tax laws.
- Experience performing tax audits.
- Experience conducting financial investigations.
- Experience reviewing taxpayer accounting systems.
