Job Overview
We are seeking caring and dependable vehicle operators (drivers) for our NEMT and paratransit services door-to-door transportation for seniors and people with disabilities across Greater Boston. No CDL is required; we provide five weeks of paid professional training, including CPR/first aid certification. This is more than a driving job: you are the reason your riders get to dialysis, work, and family. In this vital role, you will be responsible for safely transporting passengers with mobility challenges, including seniors, individuals with disabilities, and other specialized groups. Your energetic approach and commitment to safety will ensure a positive experience for every rider while adhering to all traffic laws and transportation safety regulations. Duties
- Drive NEMT and paratransit vehicles safely on assigned routes, using an in-vehicle tablet and company-provided NEMT systems.
- Help riders to and from the vehicle door and assist with boarding and exiting
- Secure wheelchairs, mobility devices, and seat belts correctly on every trip, our most important rule, with zero tolerance for shortcuts
- Complete a vehicle inspection before every shift
- Report any incident or problem to dispatch right away
- Safely operate paratransit vehicles, including wheelchair-accessible vans and transit buses, following all traffic laws and vehicle codes.
- Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking, providing wheelchair assistance and ensuring passenger safety at all times.
- Follow emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including CPR and first aid protocols when necessary.
- Maintain clear communication with dispatchers and passengers using effective verbal skills; respond quickly to traffic changes or route adjustments.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections of vehicles to ensure safety equipment is functional, report any mechanical issues promptly.
- Adhere to school policies or senior care guidelines when transporting students or elderly passengers, managing behavior as needed.
- Complete detailed logs of trips, passenger information, incidents, and vehicle maintenance records accurately and promptly.
Skills
- Proven experience in bus driving, commercial driving, or transit bus operation; familiarity with school bus driving is a plus.
- Able to speak, read, and write English well enough to communicate with riders and dispatch and use the tablet
- Able to pass a US DOT physical, including lifting/pushing 50 pounds
- Strong knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, transportation safety regulations, and emergency stop procedures.
- Excellent communication skills in English; bilingual abilities are highly valued for serving diverse communities.
- Demonstrated ability in defensive driving techniques and quick response to traffic changes to ensure passenger safety.
- Experience working with children or senior care enhances your ability to manage behavior effectively and provide compassionate service.
- Knowledge of emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including CPR certification, is preferred.
- Physical ability for heavy lifting when assisting passengers or securing mobility devices; capable of performing vehicle inspections.
- Exceptional customer service skills combined with behavior management techniques to create a welcoming environment for all riders.
