R3 Retail Development is looking for an experienced Commercial Refrigeration & Building Systems Service Technician to provide remote technical support for grocery store customers across the country.
This isn't a help desk position. It's a highly technical role designed for experienced refrigeration and HVAC professionals who want to leverage their field experience in a new and rewarding way.

R3 Retail Development is seeking an experienced Service Technician specializing in commercial refrigeration, HVAC, lighting controls, and building automation systems within the grocery store industry. This is a highly technical, remote position that serves as a critical resource for customers, field technicians, general contractors, and store personnel.
As a Service Technician, you will provide real-time technical support and troubleshooting for refrigeration, HVAC, and lighting control systems across grocery store locations nationwide. You will work closely with service contractors, customers, and internal teams to diagnose issues, recommend corrective actions, and ensure problems are resolved quickly and effectively.
In addition to supporting operational stores, this role provides technical support during remodels, new store construction, and equipment startups. You will collaborate with general contractors, mechanical contractors, electricians, and controls technicians to help ensure successful project execution and system performance.
This position is ideal for a seasoned supermarket refrigeration technician or service manager who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, mentoring others, and leveraging technology to deliver exceptional customer support.
What You'll Do
- Provide remote technical support for commercial refrigeration, HVAC, lighting controls, and building automation systems.
- Troubleshoot refrigeration system issues, including compressor racks, walk-in coolers and freezers, refrigerated display cases, and associated controls.
- Diagnose and resolve HVAC and lighting control system issues.
- Support field service technicians by providing phone and remote troubleshooting assistance during service calls.
- Communicate directly with customers, store personnel, facilities teams, and service vendors to identify and resolve technical issues.
- Provide technical guidance to general contractors and subcontractors during store remodels, equipment replacements, and construction projects.
- Assist with refrigeration and controls startups, commissioning activities, and post-installation troubleshooting.
- Review system trends, alarms, and operational data to identify root causes and recommend solutions.
- Coordinate with internal monitoring, project management, and engineering teams when additional support is required.
- Assist customers in minimizing equipment downtime, product loss, and unnecessary service costs.
- Document troubleshooting efforts, recommendations, and resolutions using company software systems.
- Maintain clear and professional communications while managing multiple customer issues simultaneously.
- Participate in shift handoffs and collaborate closely with teammates to ensure continuity of support.
Required Qualifications
- Five or more years of commercial refrigeration field service experience.
- Advanced knowledge of supermarket refrigeration systems and controls.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical individuals.
- Strong computer skills and the ability to learn industry-specific software applications quickly.
- Ability to prioritize multiple issues and work independently in a fast-paced remote environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with:
- Supermarket refrigeration systems and controls
- Compressor rack systems
- Walk-in coolers and freezers
- Refrigerated display cases
- CO₂ transcritical refrigeration systems
- Commercial HVAC systems including RTUs, DOAS, VRF, and WSHP
- Lighting and lighting control systems
- Building automation systems (BAS)
- Copeland Connect+ and Emerson/Copeland control systems
- Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
- Service Channel or similar maintenance management platforms
- Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams
- Remodel, construction, and commissioning activities within grocery store environments
EPA Certification is preferred but not required.
