The Position:
HSPRD seeks a Spanish-bilingual candidate for a paralegal position in its Employment and Complex Litigation practice group. This is a very active practice with a challenging caseload involving constitutional, employment and civil rights issues. The candidate will have the opportunity to work in a collegial environment with outstanding lawyers and other paralegals as well as with our contacts in the social justice and non-profit communities. The position currently entails a hybrid in-office/work-from-home schedule. The anticipated start date will be July of 2026.
The paralegal position is ideal for a detail-oriented person who has a strong commitment to justice and systemic change. Our paralegals have come from non-profit organizations, colleges, and business environments with the motivation to contribute to our practice areas while sharpening their skills in the legal field.
Paralegal Responsibilities:
- Interview clients and potential witnesses.
- Prepare, edit, and format documents and court filings, such as motions, briefs, and exhibits.
- Organize and maintain case files to assist attorneys and serve clients, including internal case file management and utilizing electronic document management platforms.
- Conduct internet research.
- Contribute to document review and deposition/trial preparation efforts.
- Research and understand basic Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, local court rules, and individual judge’s case management procedures.
- File documents on electronic court dockets.
- Synthesize large volumes of materials and create summaries, Excel documents, and Power Point presentations.
- Engage in data entry.
Qualifications:
- College degree; some graduate school desirable
- A high level of academic achievement
- Excellent writing, research, analytical, and communication skills
- Great attention to detail
- Strong organizational skills, flexibility, and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
- Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
- A passion for social justice work
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, internet research, and databases required; experience with complex Excel data management preferred
- Bilingual English/Spanish, including fluent speaking, writing, reading, and interpreting/translating abilities strongly preferred
- Paralegal experience with complex federal litigation would be an asset but is not required
Related prior work experience, knowledge of litigation and legal proceedings in Illinois and Federal court, working knowledge of legal citation requirements, understanding of court dockets or PACER, and experience with legal document management systems is a plus.
