CLINICAL NURSE COORDINATOR
JOB PURPOSE
The job purpose of the Clinical Nurse Coordinator at the Cancer and Blood Specialty Clinic is to provide exceptional infusion nursing care while coordinating the day-to-day clinical operations of the infusion department at the office. This position provides direct patient care while supporting infusion scheduling, inventory management, nursing workflow, and clinical coordination to promote safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.
The Clinical Nurse Coordinator serves as a clinical resource for the nursing team and collaborates with physicians, pharmacy, front office staff, and leadership to support daily clinic operations within the defined responsibilities of the position.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The essential job functions of the Clinical Nurse Coordinator include, but are not limited to:
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biologics, blood products, hydration, injections, and other prescribed infusion therapies.
- Perform patient assessments before, during, and after treatment.
- Monitor patients for infusion reactions and changes in condition and respond appropriately.
- Review physician orders, treatment plans, laboratory results, and medication parameters prior to treatment administration.
- Educate patients and families regarding treatments, medications, and potential side effects.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record.
- Maintain compliance with all nursing standards, infection control procedures, and clinic policies.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, pharmacy staff, and other members of the healthcare team.
INFUSION COORDINATION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the daily infusion schedule to promote efficient patient flow.
- Coordinate and link infusion appointments within the electronic medical record.
- Review upcoming infusion schedules to identify scheduling conflicts, missing orders, authorization concerns, or medication availability issues.
- Coordinate with front office staff regarding infusion appointments and patient scheduling.
- Assist with coordinating nursing workflow within the infusion department.
- Notify nursing leadership of staffing concerns, scheduling conflicts, or operational issues affecting patient care.
- Assist with onboarding and training new infusion nursing staff as requested.
- Serve as a clinical resource for infusion nurses and assist with day-to-day clinical questions.
INVENTORY AND SUPPLY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Order infusion-related medical supplies for the office.
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels of infusion supplies.
- Perform cycle counts and monitor inventory accuracy.
- Monitor medication and supply expiration dates.
- Assist with pharmacy inventory tracking and medication inventory as assigned.
- Coordinate with pharmacy and purchasing to maintain adequate inventory levels.
- Maintain organization and cleanliness of infusion supply areas.
COMMUNICATION AND WORKFLOW RESPONSIBILITIES
- Communicate operational concerns to the Director of Nursing, Office Manager, or appropriate leadership.
- Promote teamwork and effective communication among nursing staff, front office staff, pharmacy, and providers.
- Assist in identifying workflow improvements to increase efficiency and patient satisfaction.
- Support a positive and collaborative work environment.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESCALATION
- The Clinical Nurse Coordinator is responsible for coordinating infusion-related clinical operations within the office.
- Questions or requests outside the defined responsibilities of this position should be directed to the appropriate department or member of leadership.
- Requests for urgent, STAT, same-day, or add-on appointments must be reviewed and approved by the appropriate physician, Advanced Practice Provider, Office Manager, Director of Nursing, or other designated leadership.
- The Clinical Nurse Coordinator may communicate infusion availability and scheduling capacity but does not independently approve urgent appointments or alter physician schedules.
- The Clinical Nurse Coordinator is not responsible for:
- Employee scheduling outside of assigned nursing coordination
- Performance evaluations
- Employee discipline
- Hiring or termination decisions
- Payroll or timecard approval
- Provider scheduling
- Insurance authorizations
- General office management responsibilities not specifically assigned to this role
- Redirecting requests outside the scope of this position to the appropriate individual or department is an expected responsibility of this role.
- Perform other duties as assigned that are consistent with the employee's qualifications, licensure, and the operational needs of the clinic.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program.
- Current and unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Certification preferred.
- Minimum of three years of oncology infusion nursing experience preferred.
- Experience coordinating infusion workflows or clinical operations preferred.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Knowledge of oncology nursing standards, medication safety, infection control, and hazardous drug handling.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- The Clinical Nurse Coordinator will work in an outpatient oncology clinic setting during regular clinic hours.
- The clinic may be fast-paced, with a high volume of patients receiving infusion therapies and other oncology treatments.
- The Clinical Nurse Coordinator will collaborate with physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, pharmacy, nursing staff, front office staff, and other healthcare professionals to support patient care and clinic operations.
- Occasional travel to other Cancer and Blood Specialty Clinic locations may be required to provide nursing coverage and support clinic operations based on business and patient care needs.
- Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to perform nursing procedures and administer medications.
- Visual acuity and ability to hear verbal instructions and respond to patient needs.
- Ability to lift and move medical equipment, supplies, or assist patients as necessary.
- Adherence to all infection control protocols, hazardous drug handling procedures, workplace safety standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
DIRECT REPORTS
- The Clinical Nurse Coordinator does not have direct reports. However, this position serves as a clinical resource and provides day-to-day guidance, training, and workflow support to nursing staff while collaborating with physicians, pharmacy, front office staff, and leadership to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.
Pay: $56.00 - $66.00 per hour
