Position Summary: The Project Transformation Rio Texas (PT) Afterschool Literacy
Program Intern will run PT’s In-person Afterschool Reading Buddy program. They will
implement an afterschool reading and homework assistance program for children in 1st
-5th grade. Interns will work with PT staff and volunteers to support participating children in reading sessions to promote their development and love for reading.
Project Transformation Mission and Vision: The mission of Project Transformation is to
transform communities by engaging children, college-age young adults, and churches in
purposeful relationships. We serve under-resourced neighborhoods and come together to
invest in young lives by igniting a lifelong love of reading.
Reports to: Program Director
Classification: part-time seasonal, non-exempt status
This position runs from September through November
Job Duties: Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Greet and welcome children off the bus and/or upon arrival at the clubhouse
- Help track attendance of children/ direct volunteers
- Facilitate homework assistance (all subjects), recreation time and snacks
- Create a supportive and uplifting environment fostering relationships
- Facilitate testing and tracking of children's reading progress with provided materials
- Willingness to take on and implement additional tasks, projects, and/or program
- components as needed
- Facilitate engaging activities with children as schedule allows
- Use restorative practices when managing classroom behavior
- Share personal talents and interests with the children
- Always ensure the safety of children
- Uphold PT policies and procedures
- Ensure children are returned to their parents/guardian appropriately
- Keep the clubhouse, supplies, books, & records neat and orderly
- Clean and pick up after the children are gone
- Communicate clearly with team, intern coordinator, and PT staff
- Meet with PT staff to do weekly check-ins
- Attend and actively participate in all team meetings and team planning
- Under the guidance of the Program Director and the After School Program Coordinator, implement Project Transformation’s Book Club program for children in 1st–5th grade.
- Participate in weekly check-ins with PT staff and attend all team meetings and planning sessions.
- Send digital communications to volunteers and families as needed.
- Ensure children are safely returned to their parents/guardians at the end of each session.
- Take initiative in carrying out additional tasks, projects, or program components as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident.
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Enjoys working with children.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check.
- Demonstrates leadership skills including communication, organization, problem solving, dependability, commitment, and flexibility.
- Self-motivated and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Comfortable working with volunteers and children.
- Supports the mission and core values of Project Transformation.
- Experience with online tools such as Zoom, Canva and Google Drive.
- Reliable transportation to and from work
- Access to a reliable computer with dependable internet connection
- Experience with programs including Excel, Zoom, Google Drive, etc.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Must be self-motivated and able to work effectively independently as well as with a
- Must be comfortable with leading volunteers and children.
- Willingness to take on additional tasks, projects, and/or program components as
- Previous experience working with children.
- CPR Certified
- Bilingual; Spanish speaking
- Confident working with diverse and multi-generational populations (children, elderly,
- etc.)
- Respectful towards other faiths (program does not teach anything faith-related, but interns do interact and work with church members who serve as reading buddy volunteers)
- Able to work in overstimulating environments (such as loud noises, etc.)
- Attentive to detail
- Takes initiative / Is adaptable
- Passionate about inequality and social issues

Schedule:
Fall 2026 Children’s After School Program will run September 28 through November 18 on
Mondays & Wednesdays from 3:15pm to 5:30pm
Intern Orientation & Training- September 14, 16, 21, and 23 from 2:30-5:00pm
Intern hours - 2:45pm to 5:45pm on Mondays and Wednesdays plus 1-3/hours a week for
material and lesson preparation, team meeting, and data tracking.
Dress code: PT shirt (provided by org.) with jeans or appropriate bottoms and closed-toed
shoes. Nametag must be worn at all times. (provided by org.)
