We are seeking an experienced Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) to support a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) laboratory safety evaluation project involving 17 research laboratories located at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in McLean, Virginia.
Position Summary
The Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) will provide technical expertise in industrial hygiene, laboratory safety, OSHA compliance, and exposure assessment. Working closely with the Project Manager and laboratory safety team, the CIH will evaluate workplace hazards, assess exposure risks, review engineering and administrative controls, and assist in developing practical recommendations that improve laboratory safety and regulatory compliance.
Primary Responsibilities
- Conduct industrial hygiene evaluations and laboratory hazard assessments.
- Evaluate chemical, biological, physical, and ergonomic hazards.
- Perform exposure assessments and recommend appropriate control measures.
- Review engineering controls, ventilation systems, and laboratory work practices.
- Evaluate respiratory protection, PPE, and hazard communication programs.
- Support development and review of laboratory-specific Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
- Participate in laboratory inspections and interviews with laboratory personnel.
- Assist in evaluating laboratory safety plans and identifying compliance gaps.
- Develop recommendations using the Hierarchy of Controls.
- Support preparation of technical reports and project deliverables.
- Participate in project meetings and technical reviews.
- Coordinate with the Project Manager and laboratory safety team to ensure high-quality project execution.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification issued by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH/BGC).
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health, Occupational Safety, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field.
- Minimum 8 years of professional Industrial Hygiene experience.
- Demonstrated experience conducting workplace exposure assessments.
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations (29 CFR 1910).
- Strong technical writing and communication skills.
- Ability to travel within Northern Virginia as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting Federal, State, or local government agencies.
- Experience in research laboratories, higher education, healthcare, or manufacturing environments.
- Knowledge of laboratory ventilation systems, chemical hygiene plans, and exposure monitoring.
- Experience developing Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments.
- Familiarity with laboratory safety standards and best practices.
- Experience reviewing laboratory safety plans and compliance programs.

Schedule
- Approximately 10–20 hours per week
