- Experience: 2–4 years of testing experience required. Internships are accepted as qualifying experience.
- Export Controls: This role requires Export Control clearance.
Required Skills
- Basic understanding of internal combustion engines and machinery.
- Ability to make sketches, engineering drawings, and common computations.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
- Previous experience with computer applications and software related to engineering field, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD).
- Experience utilizing data acquisition systems (eDAQ, LMS, cDAQ).
- Experience analyzing data (linear vibration, stress/strain, ME-SCOPE, LMS).
- Experience performing modal testing.
- Ability to coordinate design and procurement of prototype hardware.
- Experience setting up tests (instrumentation & gaging as appropriate).
Technical Skills (Desired):
- Understanding of structural dynamics/vibration.
- NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) testing experience.
- Structural simulation experience.

The position is a backfill for a test engineer responsible for developing, conducting, analyzing, and managing engine structures & dynamics validation tests using Caterpillar standards & technologies. The goal is to validate components and resolve field issues to ensure Caterpillar product quality through vibration testing of engines and package gensets.
Key Contributions to the Work Group:
- Validate core engine components and systems (rotating components, PRL, valvetrain, heads, blocks, and housings) for NPI, NTI, CPI, NSI, and Assurance of Supplier programs.
- Evaluate complex structural failure modes and provide technical guidance/expertise to drive product solutions.
- Develop and execute test plans for on-engine and bench testing.
- Conduct tests in Tech Center engine labs, Lafayette IN engine center, Peoria IL & Tucson AZ proving grounds, 3rd party engine and shake labs, and field sites.
- Utilize data acquisition systems and analysis tools to evaluate linear vibration, stress/strain, and modal performance.
- Coordinate design and procurement of prototype hardware.
- Set up test instrumentation and gaging as appropriate.
- Generate reports and communicate conclusions and results to stakeholders.
- Team consists of 10 test engineers and 4 technicians.
- Candidate will work closely with design and simulation teams.
- Interaction includes project planning, report generation, and communication of results.
