GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Teacher Assistant – Alternative High School (Instructional Support)
Under the general supervision of the principal, the Teacher Assistant serves as the primary facilitator and supervisor of an assigned alternative high school classroom designed to support students enrolled in online coursework, credit recovery, and behavioral intervention settings, including In-School Suspension (ISS). The employee is responsible for maintaining a structured, safe, and orderly learning environment while monitoring student behavior, engagement, attendance, academic progress, and completion of assigned coursework.
The Teacher Assistant works independently in managing assigned students and classroom operations while providing instructional support, positive behavioral interventions, accountability, and supervision aligned with school and district expectations. The employee reports directly to the school principal or designee.
Job Summary
The Teacher Assistant provides instructional and behavioral supervision within an alternative high school setting serving students enrolled in online coursework, credit recovery, and intervention-based instructional environments. This role functions as an active classroom leader responsible for maintaining student discipline, monitoring student progress, supporting completion of online assignments, maintaining accurate attendance and grading records, and ensuring students remain engaged and on task throughout the instructional day.
The employee supervises students assigned to the classroom for academic support, behavioral intervention, credit recovery, and temporary separation from the regular school environment, including students assigned to In-School Suspension (ISS).
Essential Duties

Independently supervise and manage an assigned alternative high school classroom.

Maintain a structured, safe, and orderly, and clean learning environment conducive to student success.

Monitor student behavior and maintain discipline in accordance with school and district policies and procedures.

Keep students actively engaged and on task while completing coursework through online instructional platforms and credit recovery programs.

Provide positive support, redirection, encouragement, and behavioral accountability to students.

Assist students as needed with navigating online instructional platforms and completing assigned academic tasks.

Monitor student academic performance, assignment completion, participation, and course progress.

Assign grades and record academic progress as required by the school administrator and district procedures.

Maintain accurate daily attendance records and submit attendance and grading information to the school data manager promptly.

Stay informed and up to date on ongoing changes to student accountability requirements, district data systems, and online instructional platforms.

Monitor students assigned to the classroom for intervention, including those assigned to In-School Suspension (ISS) or other separate instructional settings.

Ensure students assigned to ISS or intervention settings complete work assigned by classroom teachers and remain separated from the general student population as directed.

Maintain appropriate documentation regarding attendance, discipline, student progress, interventions, and behavioral incidents.

Build positive relationships with students while maintaining consistent expectations for behavior and academic engagement.

Assist with crisis prevention and de-escalation when necessary and follow established school safety procedures.

Communicate effectively with administrators, counselors, teachers, data managers, and other school personnel regarding student concerns and progress.

Participate in required staff development, training, and professional learning related to alternative education, online instruction, student accountability, and behavioral support.

Follow all district policies, school procedures, confidentiality requirements, and the North Carolina Educators’ Professional Code of Conduct.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the principal or designee, including but not limited to breakfast & lunch duty, bathroom duty, hallway monitoring during class changes, and other duties as assigned.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assists teacher with executing instruction and evaluating its effectiveness.
Constantly monitors the safety and well-being of students; monitors student attitudes and encourages self-esteem; assists students with becoming increasingly independent.
Monitors student behavior and helps maintain discipline in the classroom; records time out and in- class suspension; assists with crisis prevention; restrains students as needed.
Assists students with learning; reinforces and clarifies instructions; conducts short sessions on improving study skills; provides one-on-one assistance as needed.
Maintains standardized records and documentation concerning the progress of students.
Performs general housekeeping duties in maintaining an orderly classroom; performs repair and maintenance tasks related to school equipment.
Performs various clerical duties as needed, maintains records of student progress; develops and files incident reports; grades student papers and scores tests; checks daily attendance; makes copies; develops classroom display and instructional materials; maintains and operates audiovisual equipment; orders supplies; maintains class files, etc.
Feeds students, when necessary; toilets students, if needed; and assists with any other tasks students are not able to perform for themselves.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Participates in staff development workshops. Performs other related work as required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

High School diploma or equivalent required.

Minimum of 48 semester hours of college coursework preferred.

Minimum GPA of 2.0 preferred where applicable.

Experience working with adolescents, at-risk students, alternative education settings, behavioral intervention programs, or online learning environments preferred.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, equipment for children with special needs, etc. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Due to amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; and to utilize decimals and percentages.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of office machines, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
