The hiring rate for this position is $18.33/hr.
Under the direct supervision of the Public Works Maintenance Supervisor, or designee. Performs unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor related to horticulture functions in City parks and facilities, in the Parks Division of the Public Works Department. Assignments include planting, removal and care of various plants, flowers, shrubs, and trees in accordance with City ordinances and Departmental policies. Requires the ability to be contacted by telephone for call-out after hours. Work is reviewed through observations and obtained results.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

Knowledge of modern practices and principles of horticulture and arboriculture and related fields.

Knowledgeofirrigationsystemsandminorrepair.

Knowledge of International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) standards on tree pruning, installation, and general care.

Knowledge of Florida Friendly landscaping plants and techniques.

Skill in the proper use and safe operation of vehicles, equipment, and various hand and power tools utilized in all phases of horticulture work.

Ability to physically perform light to heavy manual labor in all weather conditions.

Ability to understand, communicate, and follow both oral and written instructions.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school; or GED; one (1) year experience in landscaping, public works, construction or utilities maintenance; or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Florida Nursery Growers Landscape Associate (FNGLA) Certified Horticultural Professional, Florida Stormwater Association (FSA) Level 1 Certification, Pinellas County Landscape BMP Certification, Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic Certification; Florida stormwater Erosion, and Sedimentation Control Certification, or the ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months from date of hire. Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License, with air brake and tanker endorsement.
No Valid CDL with proper endorsement(s) – CDL Permit within six (6) months from date of hire, and valid CDL with proper endorsements within eighteen (18) months from date of hire. Employees without a valid CDL and appropriate endorsements on their date of hire will serve an extended probation until the valid CDL and endorsements are obtained, to include necessary training and classroom time and will not exceed eighteen (18) months from date of hire.
