AFT Pennsylvania is a state federation of the American Federation of Teachers, representing thousands of educators, paraprofessionals, higher education faculty, healthcare professionals, and public employees across the state. The Chief of Staff is a senior-level position responsible for managing the internal operations and strategic direction of AFT Pennsylvania. Reporting directly to the President, the Chief of Staff serves as a key advisor and organizational leader. This position supervises staff and is responsible for implementing the President's vision, coordinating internal functions, and driving strategic initiatives.
Role & Requirements
Responsibilities
Serve as principal staff advisor to the President on operational, policy, and organizational matters.
Supervise and coordinate the work of staff across departments, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
Facilitate effective communication between the state federation and local affiliates.
Lead strategic initiatives and campaigns, including political, legislative, and organizing efforts.
Represent AFT Pennsylvania in meetings, coalitions, and public forums.
Ensure compliance with AFT policies, contracts, and labor relations standards.
Oversee internal workflows and administrative functions.
Assist in budget development and financial planning with the Treasurer and Controller.
Promote a collaborative, inclusive and mission-driven workplace culture.
Qualifications
A viable applicant will have: Minimum three years of experience in education; contract negotiation and enforcement; demonstrate experience working with labor unions and collective bargaining agreements and/or membership engagement and organizing. (A combination of two or more areas is acceptable.)
Note: Minimum experience requirements must be outlined in the cover letter and educational credentials should demonstrate an ability to dissect and analyze complex arguments, both oral and written.
Minimum educational attainment: Bachelor's degree but Master's preferred.
Strong knowledge of labor unions, particularly the mission and structure of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).
Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience in a union or advocacy-based organization.
Excellent organizational, communication, and strategic thinking skills.
Commitment to public education, worker rights, and social justice.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Experience in coordinating internal staff operations and interdepartmental collaboration.
Willingness to work extended hours and travel occasionally as needed. Hours including evenings, weekends and some holidays are required.
Knowledge of commonly used computer applications, including Google Suites, Salesforce, and Zoom.
