Veterinary technicians assist veterinarians in the care of animals. Duties may include: performing an initial evaluation of an animal's condition, checking vitals, collecting samples, running in-house diagnostic tests, administering treatments, filling prescription medications and caring for hospitalized patients. In-house diagnostic tests include x-rays, urine testing, fecal screening, EKG, blood pressure and skin/ear cytology tests. Veterinary technicians are expected to be proficient in IV catheter placement and venipuncture. Our veterinary technicians also help prepare animals for surgical procedures as well as monitor the animals while under anesthesia and during recovery. They have an important role in communication with owners and maintaining proper medical records for each patient. All staff members assist with restraining animals, stocking exam and surgery rooms, sterilizing instruments, answering the phone and maintaining a clean and safe working environment.
