Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Director of Nursing, the Operating Room RN formulates and executes the nursing care for surgery patients (pediatric, adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric client) to ensure that the patient receives the highest quality of care and safety based on hospital policies and accepted standard of care.

Essential Job Duties:
1. Formulates and execute a nursing care plan for each patient undergoing a surgical procedure.
2. Check operative permit to determine correctness of procedure and that patient understands and verifies the procedure.
3. Check chart for lab work, allergies, and history and physical.
4. Ensure safety of all patients transported to and from the operating room.
5. Monitor vital signs, starts IV per surgeon’s order.
6. Offer emotional support to patient and or family.
7. Provide a safe and clean environment within the operating suite. Alert to break in aseptic technique to prevent contamination of surgical wound, supplies, instruments and personnel.
8. Assist anesthesia provider with sedation and intubation of patient.
9. Apply cautery pad in designated manner according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
10. Prepare surgical site by shaving if indicated and prep area with appropriate solutions.
11. Maintain the dignity and privacy of the patient.
12. Assume the responsibility for preparation and completion of accurate records; i.e., sponge and needle counts, record of surgical interventions, quality improvement indicators.
13. Act in the capacity of scrub nurse if necessary.
14. Record all implants and invasive tube identification numbers.
15. Identify, label and record all specimens and cultures on nurses notes and enter into specimen log. Dispatch specimens as appropriate.
16. Assist in placing dressings and apply tape.
17. Assist the anesthesia provider in the transfer of patients from surgical bed to carrier in a safe manner.
18. Monitor the post anesthesia patient according to accepted standards of care.
19. Ensure instruments, supplies and equipment are checked and stored per policy and procedure.
20. Ensure the operating suite is cleaned thoroughly according to hospital policy.
21. Monitor and assist in monthly cleaning of all storage areas and shelves. Rotate and replace sterile and non-sterile items.
22. Assist in the cleaning, preparation and sterilization of instruments and other sterile supplies.
23. Assist in the monitoring and reordering of supplies.
24. Maintains accurate narcotic and drug wastage records.
25. Adapts to changing environment; e.g., staffing patterns, patient assignments, etc.
26. Adheres to attendance and dependability standards and uses hospital time conscientiously.
27. Will participate in required education and training.
28. Will code of conduct and comply with hospital policies and procedures.
29. Performs any other duties assigned by OR supervisor, DON or Hospital Administrator.
Job Specification:
Qualifications: Requires current license as a Registered Nurse in the state of Oklahoma. One year operating room experience.
- Education/Training: Current license is required. Current BLS certification is required. Basic computer skills. Certification in ACLS preferred.
- Skills: Maintains a high degree of credibility, independence, integrity, confidentiality and trust. Strong communication and leadership skills are essential.
- Physical Effort: Must be able to stand and traverse 50% of the time. Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery. Frequently position self to provide patient care and lifting up to 50 lbs to a height of 3-4 feet and to traverse inside the hospital. Requires hearing acuity for alarms and for sound through stethoscope such as heart and lungs. Requires visual acuity for detailed measurement calibrations on syringes/equipment. Must be able to distinguish colors.
